General History

Beautiful body lines, unrivaled performance, and racing lineage combined at the dawn of the 1960s to make the Jaguar XKE an immediate sensation. With its beautiful lines and affordable price, the E-Type grew to iconic status where it has remained for more than half a century adored by collectors and enthusiasts. Independent front and rear suspension, disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and Jaguar’s legendary twin-cam inline six-cylinder engine were among the many aspects contributing to the allure. Sales were brisk with continuous development growing in both American and European markets. Continuing sales would advance into the 1970s, but enthusiasts and collectors steadfastly confirm admiration for the Series 1 models as one of the most beautiful and capable sports cars ever conceived.

History of this Example

According to the current owner, this car has been in California, located in the South Bay area for the majority of its life, possibly since new. It is believed to have been finished at the factory in red with black leather interior and repainted some years ago. At some point under prior ownership, the car was fitted with a 4.2-liter engine and all-synchromesh 4-speed, both of which remain in the car today. Currently wearing a vintage black and gold license plate UHR 234, it is possible this license plate has been on the car since the mid 1960s. The current owner purchased this car from his neighbor, a long-term owner, approximately ten years ago and has performed regular oil and fluid changes, installed an electric cooling fan, and replaced the entire exhaust system from the headers back including stainless-steel mufflers. has enjoyed the car for several years, participating in rallies and various local car club events. Having restored another XKE to a very high standard, this roadster is his “go to” car for enjoyable driving and event participation. – one that he can easily use without worry or concern. As part of the local history, an oil change sticker remains affixed to the door jamb indicating 8,616 miles when it was serviced in 1985.

Current Condition

Today, this Jaguar XKE roadster boasts high gloss red exterior paint and a black canvas top with black interior, all of which present very well. The paint is quite nice overall showing only minor areas of use including a few chips and light scuff marks, none of which detract from the generally nice presentation. The lighting, lenses, and glass are very clean, headlight buckets are correctly finished in satin silver, and the chrome front and rear bumpers are in very good condition. The body integrity is solid overall, with good panel gaps on the doors and good bonnet closure. The trunk lid sits slightly proud on the driver’s side but latches and releases without issue. The windshield surround is in very nice condition with good trim and correct triple wipers. The car wears a set of chrome wire wheels which are in excellent condition, finished with chrome dual ear knockoffs and Vredestein Sport Classic series tires. The convertible top raises and lowers easily with no significant marks on the canvas material which appears to have been more recently replaced.

The black leather and vinyl interior is clean and tidy, finished to correct factory contours. The leather seats are comfortable and firm and appear to have been more recently reupholstered including the inner seat foam, which remains in very good condition. The remaining interior is finished in black vinyl including the door cards, door sills, arm rest, and matching center console, all of which are in very good condition. Carpet and floor mats are in very good condition, though some of the associated trim, such as the shifter boot edge beading exhibit signs of age. The black dash pad is properly contoured, and the instruments, switches, and other features of the interior all appear to be correct for this early Series 1 XKE. The trunk houses a matching wire wheel and a set of tools and jack as well as two knock off wheel hammers. The interior conveys a harmonious look and feel very much in keeping with original specifications believed to have been delivered when new.

Under the hood, the engine has been upgraded to the later series 4.2-liter type. The finishes are correct and accurate for this series car and the engine compartment has been properly detailed. The correct carburetors, silver hammer-tone factory air cleaner assembly, and air filter box are reflective of former restoration efforts and regular care and detailing under current ownership. The various ancillary components, hoses, clamps, and various hardware appear to have also been correctly finished and detailed per original specifications and still retain a very handsome presentation. Importantly, the front suspension “picture frame” is in place bearing the original matching chassis number and an original chassis plate is also in place, referencing the matching chassis number as well as the original engine number, R 3091-9. The undercarriage appears sound and tidy, while the overall integrity of the body seams, welded floors, and suspension components appear properly prepared including helpful upgrades such as GAZ front and rear shock absorbers and a pair of stainless-steel mufflers dated 2020.

Included with the car

The car is accompanied by a set of tools and tool roll, THOR copper head knock off Hammer, rubber mallet, a folding knife, and a jack.
