General History

The last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 represents the most refined iteration of the original Porsche 911 that first appeared in 1963. The instrument layout, body design, and signature greenhouse are thematically unchanged from the original 911, blending quintessential aspects with the latest technology. The naturally aspirated 3.6 liter twin plug flat six and manual transmission further confirm these cars as ideal road cars, particularly in the cabriolet configuration.

In addition to the heritage architecture and bespoke craftsmanship offered in the 993, it is impressively modern and capable, nearly 30 years after its introduction. The sophisticated multilink rear suspension and wide stance offer fantastic grip and spirited acceleration. The 3.6 liter flat-6 offers torquey high-performance power resulting in a very tractable car without sacrificing the most desirable traits of the original 911. The brakes, always a Porsche strong suit, are superb, and the robust 6-speed Porsche gearbox continues to delight drivers who prefer the manual gearbox over electronic paddles. Sophisticated and high performing, capturing the essence of the original 911, the 993 is the best of both worlds.

General Overview

Originally delivered to the first California owner in November 1994, this Porsche Cabriolet has been maintained by consistent California owners since new. Receipts for services date back to 1997 including fluid services, California smog emissions testing, and regular oil and filter services. In July 2002, the car was serviced including new disc brakes, new front pads and sensors, new rear brake pads and sensors, and 30k mile service (56,877 miles). The owner consistently accumulated miles until 2006 when it was purchased by Fantasy Junction, at that time with 57,772 miles indicated. Later that year, the car was sold by Fantasy Junction to the brother of the current owner. Over the past 16 years, this Porsche has been regularly serviced by Porsche dealerships and marque specialists including the installation of a brake master cylinder and a new OEM canvas top installed in 2006.

In November 2022, with 63,232 miles indicated, the current and consigning owner (brother of the former owner) had both hood and engine lid shocks replaced, new convertible top motor gears installed, a new convertible top motor installed, passenger and driver’s seats synchronized, and a smog test performed. In preparation for consignment, the engine and transmission were inspected, the oil was changed, brake fluid flushed and refilled, a new battery installed, a new set of tires were installed (2022 date codes), and a few plastic parts for the engine compartment were replaced.

General Condition

Today, this Porsche presents in excellent cosmetic condition displaying original, glossy factory applied paint on all metal surfaces. The front bumper cap appears to have been repainted and currently shows minor chips to the front surfaces. A digital paint meter has been used to show the original finishes on all metal body surfaces returning single digit numbers which are consistent with factory applied paint. The exterior condition is further supported by a clean Carfax free from accident reports. Both the front and rear bumper caps are in excellent condition showing only minor evidence of road use All opening features show excellent factory door, trunk, and hood gaps, exceptional fit along the front and rear bumpers, beautiful trim, clear lenses, and a properly functioning retractable rear wing. The windshield and side glass are in excellent condition as is the blue canvas convertible top still displaying excellent stitching and a clear rear window. The top raises and lowers smoothly having benefited from newly installed top motor and drive gears. A convertible top boot in matching blue canvas is also in excellent condition. A set of 2002-2005 Porsche 996 OEM 10 spoke 17” wheels are in excellent condition along with the Toyo Proxes Sport tires, all four of which show plenty of tread remaining and 2022 date codes.

The original interior shows beautifully, particularly the tan leather seats which remain supple to the touch and show only minor evidence of use, primarily to the driver’s seat left side bolster. The door panels, including door sills and door pockets, are all in very nice condition. An updated Blaupunkt Highpower 4x40W CD radio unit is installed. The carpeting, headliner, and sun visors are all very nicely preserved. The dashboard, center console, and clear contrasting instruments are all in excellent condition including the speedometer which indicates 63,387 miles at consignment. The interior surfaces are all uniformly preserved, obviously benefiting from indoor storage since new. Even the steering wheel remains in excellent condition.

The engine compartment and trunk are both tidy and remain as originally built with correct factory finishes and proper service replacements installed as needed. The original engine is correct and properly maintained using Porsche parts, The intake assembly, manufacturer stamps, stickers, and labels are all in excellent condition. The front storage area retains the original materials and factory finishes including the space saving spare tire, proper components, factory treated metal parts, and an easily accessible battery.

The car starts instantly and has a great exhaust note. The motor provides a wonderful induction roar when pressed into service delivering genuinely remarkable performance, even when compared against higher horsepower cars of later build. The world class suspension offers unparalleled 911 character, while the disc brakes are backed by a firm pedal and remain easy to modulate. The chassis is composed, tight, and authentic, showing no evidence of structural compromise when inspecting the underside which reveals finishes and condition consistent with the clean Carfax and care offered by current and previous owners.
