Description

1987 Ferrari 328 GTS
VIN ZFFXA20A2110070337
Marrone Metallizzato with Brown Leather Interior

One of the last Ferraris engineered and launched during Enzo Ferrari's lifetime, the 328 succeeded the highly popular 308 for the 1986 model year and offered an increased displacement V-8 and a myriad of detail improvements throughout. The mid-engined 328, offered in both hardtop (GTB) and Targa/Spider (GTS) forms, featured an upgraded 3.2-liter V-8 putting out 270 horsepower, thanks to a sophisticated Marelli electronic ignition system and the retained Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The styling was freshened with new door handles and tidier and more modern treatment to the front and rear fascias both of which gained body color bumpers. The interior was significantly reworked as well, with new switch gear and a revised dashboard and door trims. Production of the 328 ended in the fall of 1989, marking the end of the transverse mid engine Ferraris, a line that began with the 246 Dino. Nowadays, 328s are revered for their blend of usability and comparable reliability, as well as the comparative ease of servicing since the engine does not need to be removed to perform a belt service.

This particular car spent most of its life in New Jersey, where it was routinely serviced by The Stable. It was also sold by them more than once, and by their accounts, it has always been an honest, well-looked after example. A file of service records dating back to 1996 is included, showing consistent maintenance which included a new clutch 6000 miles ago and approximately 1500 miles on a rebuilt cylinder head. It should be noted that the odometer was replaced many years ago and the old one is included, showing approximately 14,320 miles, plus the current installed unit’s mileage of under 19,500 miles, bringing the total mileage to a bit under 34,000.

The car makes a strong impression cosmetically, with lustrous paint in excellent condition overall. There is light road wear on the front of the car and a few chips that have been touched up. The body is straight and displays panel fit and operation that is like new. The trim, lights, and glass, are all excellent, as are the wheels.

The interior is in excellent original condition, with some dryness and creasing to the driver’s seat but excellent presentation otherwise. The carpets are excellent, as is the remaining leather trim, including the console. The dashboard is excellent, with no shrinkage, warping or other issues. The steering wheel is also in excellent condition, as are the instruments, switches, and controls. The car has tan over mats as well as the original cover for the removable roof.

The engine compartment is impressively clean, and is also correct and unmodified in appearance. The trunk is excellent, including the carpet and the often failed zipper compartment cover. The original jack bag with jack is present, along with light bulb holder. The front compartment is similarly nice with factory space saver spare and original plastics in excellent order.

The car runs and drives very well. It starts easily, idles properly, and sounds as it should. The clutch operates well, with positive take-up in the correct part of the travel. The gearbox shifts well, even from cold, including second gear synchromesh. The brakes are effective, linear in their operation, and easy to modulate. The suspension is tight and the car handles well, with a chuckability and compactness that is missing from later and larger Ferraris.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an attractive low-mileage 328 GTS in an unusual, striking, and surprisingly beautiful color combination. Well-maintained and a pleasure to drive, this example is mercifully free of modifications , and it is clear that it has been enthusiastically kept and conserved over the years. As all interesting cars of this period attract increasing amounts of interest, the 328 is an appreciating but still attainable way to acquire a genuinely usable classic Ferrari.
