General Overview

Combining classic looks with superb road manners and drivability, the Porsche 911 has become one of the most celebrated sports cars in automotive history. The first 911 arrived in the US in 1965, offering agile performance at a modest price. Perfect for a wide range of uses, the 911 lacked an important entry for the American market – a convertible. Efforts were made to build a convertible 911 but roll-over protection was deemed a critical part of meeting safety standards for the North American market. Thus entered the “Targa” design, which delivered open-air motoring while retaining the safety and structural rigidity the Porsche engineering team desired. The 911 Targa became a hit with US buyers, arriving in 1967 and selling quite well in the model lineup.

By 1975, the Porsche 911S Targa was outfitted with 2.7-liter engines, larger impact bumpers, and K-Jetronic CIS Bosch fuel injection. The larger engine and increased horsepower offered with the S model allowed for a superb balance of power and handling while still retaining the classic 911 body.

According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity accompanying this car, this 911S departed the factory finished in silver metallic with black leatherette interior. The car was optioned with the following features as indicated on the Porsche CoA:

-Equipment for California
-Forged Alloy Wheels
-Automatic Safety Belts, Front L/R

With California equipment installed at the factory, this car was sold to the first owner in California where it appears to have remained for most of the time, under long-term ownership. With delivery noted in the original Warranty Voucher Book as April 23, 1975, the car was first serviced at Allred Porsche/Audi May 14, 1975, with 1,181 miles. Service stamps continued at 12,442 miles on April 15, 1976. Additional service records accompanying the car date back to 1978 with a 1982 invoice showing 18,483 miles. By February 22, 1988, mileage had accumulated to 47,359 miles when the engine was serviced at Meister Service, Porsche, Audi, VW, BMW in Northridge, CA. Service invoices indicate that the car remained under the same ownership through this period. Service continued through the 1990s with mileage documented in 1990 at 53,474 miles, and in 2002 under the same family ownership with 53,888 miles when front left and right ball joints, tie rod ends, and a left inner rear axle boot were replaced. The same family ownership continued in 2011 when the car was serviced with 54,004 miles. The current owner purchased the car in 2013 with 54,272 miles as indicated on the title “actual miles”.

While under current ownership, in June 2013, the car was serviced at Vanguard Motors, San Francisco, CA. Service included oil and filter change, a new engine mounts, new shifter bushing and ball socket, new right valve cover gasket, new fuses, and accelerator linkage adjusted. In March 2014 Vanguard serviced the car again replacing the ignition lock, installing a new accelerator pedal, and installing four new Bridgestone Potenza tires.

In April 2023 with 54,633 miles the car was involved in a rear end collision. The engine lid was replaced, and the rear bumper was repaired and refinished. While in the shop additional detail was performed on the Targa bar and trim. Under the past ten years of current ownership, this 911S Targa has since accrued less than 400 miles.

Condition Overview

Today this rare 911S Targa presents in driver level condition. The odometer indicates 54,650 miles which are stated to be original to the car based on long term ownership and California State title documentation. The exterior finish is generally good overall but shows finish variation indicating repaint under prior ownership. Though the overall car is complete and generally sound, at some point under prior ownership the car was involved in a front passenger side collision which damaged the front fender and inner fender section inside the front storage compartment. In preparation for sale, a professional alignment shop reviewed and aligned the car to as close to factory specifications as possible.

The doors, hood, and deck lid all open and shut as expected, with generally good panel gaps, though the passenger side door has a tighter panel gap to the front fender. The impact-style bumpers are in very good condition as are the rubber bumper overriders at the rear and rubber bumper accordion trim which remains in generally good condition showing only modest signs of age. The satin silver Targa bar is in excellent condition as are the emblems, chrome headlight trim, side view mirrors, and door handles. The rear and side glass are in excellent condition overall with no major marks of note particularly on the rare original rear glass, all of which bear the Sekurit and Sigla brand etches. The windshield shows evidence of road use but is otherwise clean and free of major blemishes. The folding Targa roof is original and remains in good condition though showing some sagging to the exterior material when pulled tight due to the age of the original fabric. The Targa roof installs smoothly to the windshield header and Targa bar. The Fuchs wheels are original to the car and while they have no significant curb rash, some areas of the finish have aged. A set of Sumitomo HTR A/S PO3 195/65 R15 radial tires are mounted and are dated 2022.

The largely original black leatherette interior displays a combination of very nicely preserved features with some areas showing modest patina. The original black leatherette passenger front seat shows signs of use while the driver’s seat appears to have been more recently and properly reupholstered. The door panels, side panels, and rear seating display finishes and materials consistent with factory original Porsches. The carpet and floor mats are in excellent condition, likely more recently replaced. The dashboard is in very good condition with minor use evident to the ignition key switch area. Instruments are in very good visual condition with contrasting dial faces, and clear lenses. A Motorola AM/FM stereo 8-track player is installed complete with a Hank Williams 8-track tape.

The front storage compartment contains a space saver wheel which appears to have not been used and the overall cosmetic condition is tidy and clean. With the carpet removed, evidence of passenger side inner fender repairs can be seen including areas around the smugglers compartment. The correct chassis stamping is in place and components appear to be factory original and correct.

Under the engine lid, the correct matching numbers 2.7-liter engine is clean and original with finishes and components that appear visually consistent with the recorded original miles. Original engine emissions stickers are in place, as are the original features of the engine. The underside mid-floor pan and rear section presents in generally good condition though the passenger side forward corner floor and inner fender flanged area is deformed at the seam, also attributed to the front damage. The car has been serviced at a professional alignment center where it was aligned, adjusted, and set to as close to factory specifications as possible.

This is a very complete, documented, original, matching numbers Porsche 911S Targa with known history since new, clean California title, and driver level cosmetics. Ready to start the next chapter in ownership history, this handsome Targa will delight any 911 purist who desires open touring in a top performance S model Porsche.
