Description

1973 Mercedes 450SL s/n 10704412006718 Powder blue with blue leather interior Introduced in 1972, the 107 chassis version the Mercedes SL enjoyed a spectacular seventeen year production run before it was replaced. Upon its introduction, it was hailed for its technological sophistication, and was Mercedes` first truly modern car. This particular example is an early US specification car and is thus equipped with the significantly more attractive small chrome bumpers that were fitted to all European cars. It is also fitted with the considerably peppier high compression engine making over 60hp more than the equivalent 1980 version (225hp VS 160hp). As a 1973, this car is also exempt from California`s strict emissions laws and does not have to be smogged. It has had three owners from new and has been here in California since the mid 1990`s. The total mileage is just 96,000, and thanks to some recent cosmetic attention, the car is in fine order. The paintjob is a high quality job with only a few minor flaws, including a couple of chips that have been touched up on the door edges, one chip on the drivers door, and a scratch on the trunk lid. The paint is otherwise excellent with no orange peel or signs of poor preparation. There are a few barely noticeable areas around some of the rubber trim where the masking was not perfect. Otherwise the paint is lovely. The chrome and metal appears to be all original and has survived very well. The bumpers and grille are excellent, with the exception of some hazing on joining trim pieces. The remainder of the metal trim shows some scratches but is still very nice. The rubber trim on the bumpers and body is still glossy and nice, and the rubber seals are starting to show some age. The auxiliary fog lights are in outstanding order and appear to have been recently replaced. The remaining lights and glass are excellent as well. The interior of the car is also very nice. The seats were recently redone in lovely dark blue leather of the correct type, including the square perforations. The carpets and floor mats are nice original pieces, with just a bit of fading. The dash is excellent with no cracks. The trunk is original and unmolested, as is the engine compartment. The engine itself is reasonably clean and shows signs of good maintenance, including what appears to be a new radiator. Underneath the car is honest and complete, with no obvious signs of accident damage. The car comes with a number of extras including a cover, the hardtop, dark blue sheepskin seat covers, the manual pack, and some papers showing the ownership history. This is a great opportunity to acquire one of these nearly indestructible Mercedes convertibles with the difficult to find small bumpers and more powerful engine. It has been well looked after and is now ready to enjoy, just as the weather is improving. With a hardtop, however, this car would also make a fine and stylish car to be enjoyed all year around. Regardless, this is a stylish, reliable and pretty way to enjoy the old world craftsmanship for which Mercedes is famous.
