Description

1972 TVR Vixen 2500
s/n 1997T
Red with Black Interior

The result of Trevor Wilkinson’s uncompromising philosophy on sports cars, the TVR Vixen was a limited production and very focused car that evolved from the earlier Grantura. All variants of the Grantura and Vixen were powered by four cylinder engines other than the 2500, which used Triumph’s famously rorty inline-6 from the TR6. The Vixen retained the lightweight construction that distinguished TVRs, with tubular frame and fiberglass bodywork. All independent double wishbone suspension was used front and rear, with rack and pinion steering and front disc brakes. Just 385 examples of the Vixen 2500 were built, making them rare finds today anywhere.

This particular car is a four owner car with decades of known history. Its most recent owner, a collector with a high caliber collection of Ferraris and other blue chip cars, purchased the car from a fellow who had owned it for many years after inheriting it from his father. It had been in the same family for over 25 years, and the father purchased the car from a friend of his. According to the long term owner, the indicated mileage of 55,438 is from new. The car was restored in 2005 and comes with miscellaneous invoices back to the mid 1980s. It was shown at the TVR Car Club of North America events in Carlisle in 2006 and 2007, where it won special mention awards both times. It is uniquely equipped with sunroof and houndstooth check seat inserts.

The car is in very good cosmetic condition. The paint is glossy but displays some surface imperfections and orange peel. The body is in very good condition with generally good fit, other than the right door, which sits a bit proud. The chrome trim is in good condition, with minor pitting on the door panels and side mirror. The lights and glass are in excellent shape and the car has correct Lucas headlamps.

The interior is in excellent shape. The carpets and seat upholstery are like new, and the dashboard and center console are also in great condition. The houndstooth inserts are a neat period touch and brighten the interior considerably. The instruments and switches are in very good condition throughout and will look familiar to British car owners. The headliner appears as though it could be original and is in very good considering this. The door panels are minimal and purposeful with their basketweave trim. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent.

The engine compartment is tidy and relatively clean but not detailed for show. It has a period correct appearance and the car retains its Zenith Stromberg carburetors. Accessibility is excellent and the engine shows signs of recent maintenance.

This is a very rare opportunity to acquire one of the 385 six cylinder TVR Vixens made. This car has great history with low mileage and few long term owners. It comes with extensive documentation including old issues of the TVR enthusiast magazine, invoices back to the 1980s, old photographs of the car, and the awards that it won.
