Description

1971 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 Coupe s/n 11102612000889 Dark Blue with Cream Leather Interior Introduced in 1961, the W111 and W112 generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class replaced the famed `Adenauer` cars and was the absolute top of the line car. They incorporated a number of advanced technical and convenience features including sophisticated independent suspension all around, fuel injection, and disc brakes. In pillarless coupe form they are particularly elegant, and this example`s appeal is further enhanced by the fitment air conditioning and a sunroof. Initially powered by six cylinder engines, the last and most desirable cars were fitted with relatively high compression overhead cam 3.5 liter V8`s improved performance. This particular car is a European example that was fitted with Behr air conditioning and imported to California in 1971. It has had two owners in the San Francisco area and has covered about 112,000 miles from new. Its current owner is a Mercedes collector and has had the car for approximately twenty years. It has been serviced regularly as needed and has a new set of trigger points and new shock absorbers. Cosmetically, the car is in attractive driver condition. The paint is on the whole lovely and striking, though it is faded on the hood and cowl vent. The paint is otherwise very nice, and the body panels are very straight and fit well. The chrome shows some pitting but is still attractive. The glass and lights are generally good, though there are two chips in the windscreen. The Bosch fog lamps are excellent. There is one small area of cosmetic bubbling behind the right rear wheel, but no other significant blemishes to the body. The interior has just the right amount of patina, with still excellent leather, dash, and headliner. The carpets are slightly faded but otherwise nice, and the headliner is very good. A modern Alpine stereo has been fitted, and the car fitted with a properly installed sunroof early in its life. The wood shows some aging, as do a few other bits of trim, but the overall impression of the interior is of the impressive quality with which Mercedes built the car. The engine compartment and trunk are both impressively clean. The engine compartment reveals many signs of proper care, including a properly sized battery, correct hose clamps, and new hoses. The trunk is immaculate and most importantly, rust free. Frequently cars kept in less benign climates exhibit rust, and the trunk floor is the usually first area to display corrosion. The carpets and jack are excellent as well. The underside is solid and free of structural corrosion. This is a fine opportunity to acquire a well looked after example of this elegant and beautifully engineered car. A 2-owner California car from new, this car is unmolested and rust free, and the fitment of air conditioning and sunroof are sure to enhance the car`s usability and cruising enjoyment for the new owner.
