Description

1968 Porsche 911 T/R
s/n 118 2 0639
Light Ivory with Orange with Black Interior

Starting in 1968, the 911 T/R was a very limited production car that Porsche made available to customers looking to race or rally their 911s. To take advantage of the low level of equipment of the 911T, and thus its low weight, the 911 T/R was based on the 911T, and could be specified in a wide variety of ways to reflect the use and budget of the customer. Two engines were available, the 911S engine (available with or without Rally kit, which brought 20 extra horsepower through twin exhaust and revised carburetion), or the exotic twin-plug 906 engine. This was a full on race engine with titanium connecting rods, lightweight fly wheel, heavy duty clutch. The remainder of the car was set up with competition use in mind, through the inclusion of baffled fuel tanks, twin fuel pumps, removed sound deadening, removed extraneous trim, stripped interiors, racing seats, lightened flywheel and heavy duty clutch, reinforced engine mounts, Koni shock absorbers, front and rear sway bars, ventilated brake discs, lowered ride height, and unpolished aluminum wheels. A wide variety of other competition type options were also available, including large capacity fuel tank, limited slip differential, oil coolers, rally lamps, and lightweight bodywork. Just 35 examples were built in all.

This particular car was sold new in February of 1968 painted in its current color of light ivory and fitted with Koni shock absorbers, front and rear sway bars, left and right Recaro racing seats, large capacity 100 litre fuel tank, limited slip differential, and 911S engine with rally kit. The car was raced extensively by Ernst “Hunter” Seiler in 1968 and 1969 at a variety of venues, including Hockenhiem, Monthlery, Monza, Nurburgring, and many others. Another Swiss fellow, Amacher Dolf, purchased the car and continued to race the car in Europe until 1973 or so. In 1970, the car was fitted with factory 911 S/T flares, and the car has also been fitted with a twin plug 906 engine of the type that would have originally been specified.

The car comes with a great deal of documentation to support the original competition history, including timing sheets, magazine articles with photos of this car, and many period photos of the car in various configurations. The car also comes with FIA Historical Technical Pass papers, Certificate of Authenticity, and a copy of the Porsche factory publication for racing cars, “Information regarding Porsche Vehicles Used for Sports Purposes”. Approximately three years ago, the car was comprehensively restored in Switzerland to very high standards, and in April of 2009, the car received a full service to the engine, transmission, brakes, and chassis. The valves were adjusted, the fluids checked or changed as necessary, all bolts tightened as necessary, the battery replaced, new spark plugs installed, the exhaust refinished, and various other jobs completed.

The restoration was done to high standards, and makes a strong impression. It is very clean, but is not unduly shiny or overrestored. The feel is that of functional tidiness that is appropriate to the car’s racing purpose. The paintwork is high quality, and the body is extremely straight and solid. The panels and gaps are excellent, and the metal trim is very good, with only light scratching. The wheels are excellent and are genuine items, including the rear minilights. The Cibié auxiliary lamps are also original and excellent, while the remaining lamps and glass are also excellent.

The interior is similarly nice to the exterior, with a spare, extremely clean, and functional aesthetic. It is trimmed surprisingly completely, with full door panels, carpets, and headliner. The 10,000 RPM tachometer, lightweight door panels, roll bar, drilled rally passenger floor board, and small diameter steering wheel are indications of the car’s sporting intent and purpose. The headliner is in good shape, and the dashboard, instruments, and switches are excellent. The seats, carpets, and other upholstery are also excellent. There is a modern plumbed in fire system.

The trunk is also extremely clean and sparsely furnished. The large fuel tank with center filler is an impressive sight, while the chassis, mechanical systems, and hardware are extremely fresh and crisp. The strut towers have been reinforced and a strut tower brace is also in place.

The engine is also very tidy, with small diameter fan with low fiberglass shroud. The engine lid has a mesh grille with rain guards to protect the 46mm Webers. The strut towers have been reinforced, and the twin coils, 12-plug distributor, and twin fuel pumps are also special competition touches to indicate that this is no ordinary 911. It is very clean throughout.

This is a truly unique opportunity to acquire a genuine and extremely rare (one of 35) competition 911 with great history and provenance. It is in superb ready to go condition and is extremely well-documented, with period documents relating to the racing history, photographs, Certificate of Authenticity, and FIA papers. It is also eligible and ready for a wide variety of events, including the Le Mans Classic, Tour Auto, Monterey Historics, and more.
