Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330GTC is highly sought after today. These cars are extremely nice to drive, even in today’s traffic, because of the wide torque band provided by the 4 litre V-12 and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. The cars perfectly tread the line between the classic Ferrari essence and more modern technical features such as rear-mounted 5-speed gearbox, disc brakes and independent suspension all around, and genuinely muscular powerplants. Because of its elegant understated lines and classic Ferrari layout, the 330 GTC has finally emerged from years of under-appreciation. Just 600 330 GTC were constructed between 1966 and 1968. While many GTC owners have large collections of important Ferraris, their GTC will often be the choice car for driving events.

This particular example is a nicely mellowed car that was restored in the late 1980s and runs and drives extremely well. The car has known history back to 1979, passing through the hands of several owners who kept the car fastidiously, as demonstrated by many service records from the 1990s. The car’s most recent owner had the car for about eight years in Texas, having acquired it from his wife’s uncle, who had the car about five years. In the most recent owner’s care, the car was regularly used in Ferrari Club events and serviced on a regular basis by Norwood.

Cosmetically, the car presents well, with an older restoration that is holding up nicely. The body is extremely straight with consistent gaps and good fit. The paintwork was done to very good standards, and is in generally good condition, although the front end has some chips from road use, and there are a few chips elsewhere on the car. The chrome is in good to very good condition, with some pitting on the bumpers, but minimal wear or deterioration on the remaining chrome. The car sits on Borrani wire wheels which are in excellent shape. The glass and lights are very good to excellent, with the only wear being some light chipping to the front windscreen from road use. The Carello headlamps are correct for the car and are in good shape.

The interior is in nice shape, with high quality leather that is mellowing beautifully, with only light creasing in evidence. The wood is in good shape, and the carpets are excellent. The headliner, dashboard, switches, and instruments are generally in very good but not freshly restored condition, although the headlight stalk on the steering column is missing. There are a few common areas where the black vinyl upholstery is showing wear such as around the shift gate and near the ignition. The steering wheel is in excellent order and the car is fitted with a pinstripe Becker Mexico cassette player. The weather stripping around the driver’s door aperture has cracked in several places.

The engine compartment is tidy and generally correct in appearance, and has the look of a well-maintained car that has been driven and enjoyed, but not neglected. The finishes are correct throughout such as the black wrinkle finish on the valve covers and the semi-gloss airbox. The inner fenders are sound but unrestored in appearance, and the correct yellow fuel lines are still in place. The trunk is original in appearance and in fine shape with correct and likely original carpeting. The spare is a Campagnolo alloy and the inner trunk beneath the carpets is in sound unrestored condition with no evidence of accidents or repairs.

This example is a joy to drive, being well-resolved and coherent in the operation of its mechanical systems. The engine is well-tuned, revs eagerly, and displays good oil pressure. It sounds great and produces good power. The gearbox has excellent synchromesh and the linkage is properly adjusted. The chassis and suspension are composed and controlled, and the brakes work as they should, pulling the car up evenly. The entire car has an effortless operation that feels coherent and broken-in, in contrast with freshly restored cars, which sometimes feel stiff.

Long a favorite among Ferrari connoisseurs who appreciate their excellent road manners and elegant styling, the secret around the 330 and 365 GTC is out, with a recent explosion in values. After years in the shadow of some of their less understated brethren, GTCs are now appreciated for their mechanical sophistication, performance, elegance, and rarity. Just 600 examples were built and this example, finished in an elegant color combination and nicely mellowed, is a very satisfying example to drive. Perfectly presentable and usable as is, it is an ideal touring or event car, but could also be an engaging car for an enthusiastic owner seeking to bring the car closer to perfection.

This wonderfully drivable example is accompanied by an original owner’s manual and parts book, a Campagnolo spare wheel with tire, and the original jack and bag, and largely complete original tool roll.
