Description

1967 Maserati Mistral 4.0 Coupe
s/n AM109A1 1172, engine no. AM109.A1.1172
Cream with Black Leather Interior

With beautiful Frua coachwork and a fuel-injected twin-plug dual overhead cam inline-6 derived from Maserati’s 250F Formula 1 race car engine, the Mistral is a beautiful, technically interesting, and underappreciated classic. The Mistral was introduced in 1963 in 3.7 liter form, making it among the first fuel-injected production cars, and was equipped with a 5-speed ZF transmission and disc brakes all round. In 1966, the powerplant was upgraded to a 4.0 liter unit, creating what is now the most sought-after variant of the car.

This particular car spent many years in Tennessee, having been sold there in August of 1990 to a long term owner who kept the car for nearly 25 years. Approximately one year ago, it was purchased by a collector who had the car mechanically recommissioned after years of disuse. Included among this were redone fuel and hydraulic systems. The fuel injection was rebuilt with new seals, injectors, valves, diaphragm, and fuel lines. The clutch master and slave cylinders, brake master cylinder and booster, front calipers, and soft brake lines were replaced or rebuilt, and a new battery was also fitted. The car runs and drives but does need new tires and the wire wheels rebuilt.

The car is impressively nice for an example that sat for some many years. The body is straight with good fit and gaps and minimal structural deterioration. The passenger’s door sits proud while the driver’s door shuts perfectly. There are a few small superficial bubbles around the car and one area of perforation in the rear splash area, but the undercarriage and body are otherwise very solid. The paint shows some scratches and chips but still has good gloss. The bright trim is also quite nice, with some swirls and light pitting but generally good presentation. The glass and lights are in good shape, aside from some chips to the windscreen. The car has Carello headlamps. The wheels show some rust.

The interior shows some age but is complete and serviceable. The seats were partially retrimmed in the past and show plenty of patina. The door panels show some age as well. The dashboard is generally in nice unrestored condition, including upholstery, switches, and instruments. The headliner sags somewhat and the carpets are intact. The luggage compartment is in similar condition, with intact upholstery and carpet showing some age.

The engine compartment is pleasant, honest, and generally clean. The fuel injection system and intake components were cosmetically restored when they were rebuilt and are in superb condition, while the remainder of the engine compartment has a nice even patina. The car runs and drives although the tires definitely need replacement. The motor sound healthy and the fuel injection system appears to be properly set up. The synchromesh is good.

This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a desirable matching-numbers 4.0 liter Mistral that is very solid, intact, and honest. It could be made into a charismatic driver with minimal additional effort, or is an excellent basis for a comprehensive restoration. The fuel injection system has been sorted already and the car represents a strong value as a running, driving car compared to a needy 3500 project for similar money.
