Description

1966 Morgan Plus 4 Roadster
s/n 7193200095, engine no. CT7228ME
British Racing Green with Black Interior

Morgan’s famously anachronistic sports cars represent the quintessential British motoring experience. Seen as outmoded even by the 1960s, the cars were actually developed continuously, with changes incorporated over the years to keep the cars technically abreast of contemporary developments in key areas, even if other areas, most famously the ash framed bodies, remained as traditional as ever. With that in mind, although the Plus 4 appeared similar to the 4/4 of the interwar years, updates such as the latest Triumph TR4A powerplant (with 105hp instead of 38hp as in the 4/4 or 68hp in the early Plus 4), and front disc brakes, ensured that the Plus 4 was still sporting, thirty years after the 4/4’s introduction. Despite their old-fashioned appearance, the Plus 4 was dynamically very capable, and the cars successfully competed in SCCA events and in GT racing, including a 13th overall finish at the 1962 Le Mans.

This particular car is a longtime California example that its current owner purchased in January of 1971 in the United Kingdom. He bought the car from a Mr. V Derwent and paid £795 according to a copy of the bill of sale included with the car, which also notes the engine number is the same as that currently in the car. He brought the car back with him to the United States and it has lived in the San Francisco area. Since then, the car has been used sparingly and has just 26,000 miles from new. It has been sympathetically maintained with some restorative work performed over the years.

Cosmetically, the car is a very nice driver level example that makes a strong impression. The paintwork was done to high standards and is in excellent condition, with very minimal blemishes. The body is straight and solid. The chrome is very good to excellent, with some superficial pitting on the front bumper. The rear bumper is free of significant pitting. The wheels are very nice and wear Michelin XZX tires. The lights and glass are also very nice. The car has full weather equipment including top and tonneau cover in very nice condition. The original unrestored side curtains are included with the car.

The interior is in very good condition. The wood dashboard has been refinished and is excellent, while the vinyl upholstery is in nice condition. The instruments and switches are in very nice shape as well. The steering wheel chrome has light pitting but the steering wheel is otherwise in great shape. The engine compartment does not appear to have been restored ever, but is clean and tidy.

The car runs and drives very well, and is exceptionally fun to drive. The engine starts easily and makes a great noise that the English would describe as rorty. The carburetors are well tuned and the performance is peppy. The gearing is useful in town and on the open road, and the gearbox shifts as it should. The brakes are effective and linear in operation. The steering is communicative and precise and the chassis has a coherent feel that encourages the driver to use the car as it was intended, making it the quintessential sports car.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a great driving Morgan that has been with the same owner for 44 years. A cosmetically attractive and mechanically sound example, it perfectly epitomizes the traditional English sports car. It is a lot of car for the money and comes with luggage rack and weather equipment that includes side curtains, top, and tonneau cover.
