Description

1966 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint Zagato
s/n AR 856053
Red with Black Leather

Thanks to its expressive styling, reduced weight, and rarity, the 2600 Sprint Zagato is the most desirable of all the 2600 variants. With a 300 lb. lighter curb weight and shorter wheelbase, it is more sporting to use than the 2600 Sprints by Bertone, yet retains that fantastic inline-six growl, which is especially lovely on this car due to its triple Weber carburetors. One of just 105 built, this is a very rare example which is fundamentally solid, with nice driver cosmetics, benefiting from considerable recent restorative work.

Included in this recent work was paint, chrome ($5,000), upholstery ($5000), and an engine service inclusive of the replacement of many of the ancillary belts and hoses, a carburetor tune and synchronization, and distributor tune, metal work to the body, fabrication of new side windows, rebuilt shocks, five new tires, and new drive shaft bearings, among many other smaller improvements.

Cosmetically, the car is best described as a nice driver example; having seen much refurbishment during the current ownership period. The body, which was already generally solid, saw over ninety hours of corrective work prior to a repaint in deep red (regency red, a Jaguar color). The gaps are very good throughout and the panels are generally straight. The chrome and stainless trim around the windows, hub caps, bumpers, and many other areas has been redone, and makes a fresh, strong presentation. The window glass is in good condition, with new side windows original rear glass, and very good replacement windscreen. The difficult to replace Cibie headlamps remain as original. The wheels, which are unique two-piece units with steel centers and alloy rims, are in good condition and fitted with five new Pirelli 165HR400 tires.

The interior has also been largely restored with fresh, soft black leather covering the seats, new headliner upholstery, fresh wool carpets, console upholstery, and pedal pads. The gauges, while correct to original, show minor fogging.

Evidence of the much recent work performed shows within the engine bay. The valve cover is nicely polished, and the inner fender wells show well. The carburetor hardware looks fresh, and the overall impression of the engine bay is much nicer than driver standards. This car has been converted to the desirable triple Weber carburetor format. The carburetors have been recently tuned and synched, and the distributor has been recently tuned as well.

Despite the fact that nearly $45,000 has just been spent on the car, some minor mechanical issues remain unresolved. The transmission goes in and out of each gear, and has excellent syncros, but makes some bearing noises, and pops out of third gear. The clutch operates normally. The engine starts easily and has good power. The brakes are effective. There are wipers fitted, but they are not functioning at this time. The passenger’s door opens and closes, and while body fit is good, remains somewhat difficult to operate. The side windows are difficult to roll up and down. The gauge lights don’t appear to come on, and one headlight has a bad ground.

Included with the car are records for the work mentioned above, considerable reference material in the form of parts suppliers, schematics, and transmission and engine manuals. With just 105 of these example built by Zagato, there are rare finds and situated nicely for future appreciation. Once sorted, they are wonderful long distance machines, and will effortlessly cruise on the highway at 85 mph. Eligible for a growing number of tours and rallies; this 2600 will no doubt prove to be both an interesting discussion piece and a practical investment for the new owner.
