Description

1965 Bobsy SR-3
Silver with Red Stripe

The Bobsy Sports Racer was the brainchild of Jerry Mong, who designed and manufactured his first car, a mid-engined aluminum bodied car in 1961. After constructing two SR-1s, the SR-2 appeared in 1963, which featured an aluminum space frame, and could be powered by a number of four cylinder engines, ranging from under a liter to up to two liters. The cars were extremely light, and also quite competitive. Indeed, Chuck Dietrich drove an SR-2 to the 1963 Sports Car Club of America G Modified National Championship, a season which included 9 wins. Production records indicate that only four SR-2’s were built before being succeeded by the SR-3 , which was designed specifically to take advantage of the significant increases in grip provided by the then new wider racing tires. In addition to the sports racers, Jerry Mong would go on to design and build race winning formula V’s and Formula Fords.

This particular car is the last SR-3 built, and the only example built with monocoque center section. Originally powered by a 750cc Imp engine, this car was repowered with a twin cam Lotus engine in 1985, and completely restored in 2010 by Geoff Heller. The car has been actively raced for many years and comes with recent invoices for event set up, as well as four log books. The car has already been accepted to CSRG, which is often a challenging process.

This car was sold new to an owner in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, and maintained by Jerry Mong’s company Vanguard, until being sold to its second owner, who kept it for many years, but never ran it. Mong purchased the car back in the 1980s, did most of the restoration before selling it on to another keeper. This provenance is supported by a letter from Mong written in 1988.

Since the restoration, the car has about ten hours on it. The 1600cc motor was dyno-ed at 188hp and the car is fitted with a 5-speed Hewland gearbox, with 21 gear sets. The car also has new Girling brake calipers, new front rotors, one race on a new set of Avon tires and a variety of spare, including windscreen, a pair of wheels, the gear sets, a second roll bar, and spare ignition components.

The car is in extremely nice vintage racer condition. The bodywork is in good shape and the paint is generally excellent, save for a few cracks and chips on the front clip. The front of the car has clear bra to protect the paint. The paint on the rear clip is like new. The wheels are excellent and the chassis and suspension is nicely detailed and very clean. The engine compartment is tidy and appears to have been professionally and thoroughly prepared, with stainless steel oil cooler lines and Aeroquip fittings throughout.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire what is likely one of the best Bobsys available. With known history from new including ownership by Jerry Mong, this car has great provenance, and is further set apart by being the last SR-3 built, and the only one built with monocoque center section of the chassis. The car has been thoroughly restored to high standards and is well documented with recent invoices, correspondence from Jerry Mong, magazine articles, information relating to setting up the car, and log books. Additionally, compared to other period sports racers like the Lotus 23 at nearly twice the price, the Bobsy represents an excellent value and with CSRG acceptance, this car is eligible for some of the premier vintage events.
