Description

1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Touring
s/n AR*192753* Eng. No. AR00601*06598*
Oro Chiaro with Red Leather Interior

Italian automaker Alfa Romeo gained fame in the early 1930’s for their line of twin-cam, straight six powered Grand Touring cars. Following World War II, the company became known mostly for their lightweight, small displacement four cylinder cars. The 2600 Sprint marked a return to building the powerful and luxurious “6C” Gran Turismo cars that made the company famous.

The engine was a direct derivative of the twin cam of old, now displacing 2584cc and producing 170hp.The exotic all-alloy motor was rugged too, and famously served in the Italian Carbinieri’s “Squadra Volante” as high-speed “Pantera” police pursuit vehicles. European and South American racers took note, and the Sprints were raced enthusiastically with notable success. Alessandro Ragazzi won the European TT 3 Liter Championship in 1967 in a 2600 Sprint.

More well appointed than the Giulietta and the Guilia Spiders, which made Alfa Romeo a viable production manufacturer, the 2600 Spider by Touring was a refined performance touring car equipped for comfort. Better suited for long distance touring events, with their larger displacement, wider torque band, standard 5 speed transmission, and larger carrying capacity, the 2600 Spider is popular among driving enthusiasts who expect to travel hundreds of miles over several days, and arrive in comfort.

This particular car, as a very late-production example, is distinguished by its front and rear disc brakes, among other minor improvements made towards the end of the production cycle. This car has been fitted with Weber carburetors, which were an option when new, and are more desirable, serviceable, and produce more horsepower than the Solexes. Considerable mechanical work has been performed by Alfa Romeo expert Al Cortez in Los Angeles, California including a major brake system overhaul, restoring the radiator, a valve adjustment, and the fitment of newer period correct Pirelli tires.

Coming out of long term California, dry-climate ownership, this 2600 Spider by Touring is in (and has always been in) impeccable structural order. There has never been any rust or rust repairs to the undercarriage, chassis supports, or floors. Recently, the exterior was refinished to better than new standards by Pebble Beach winning Beckman Metalworks in Costa Mesa, California and is outstanding accordingly. Virtually no age or use is evident since the repaint, and the panels are exceedingly straight and sharp, with exceptional gaps throughout the car. Christensen’s Chrome Plating, another multi-time Pebble Beach winning outfit, were contracted to refinish much of the brightwork inside and out. The car sits on restored, chromed factory wheels, and appears to have been lowered slightly, improving its stance and appearance. A magnificent new leather interior was installed by respected Alfa experts Santo’s Upholstery shop, whom also installed the beautiful new Robins canvas top to color match the leather. New medium grey wool carpets have also been installed. Cosmetically, and structurally speaking, we believe this car is among the best 2600 Spiders in existence today.

In addition to its beautiful presentation, the car drives exceptionally well, and would be fit for long distance touring, or road rally events. The engine makes exceptional power, with a wonderful straight-six exhaust note. Second gear synchro exhibits minor wear, as is common to these cars. The suspension and brakes are both effective and well balanced. The odometer shows just 71,920 miles, which is believed to be correct from new.

According to the current owner, approximately $65,000 has been spent on the recent mechanical and cosmetic restoration work which has brought the car to the incredibly high standards you see it in today. Included with the sale are the original Solex carburetors and air cleaner housing, a mint original 2600 owner’s manual, and a nearly complete factory tool kit.
