Description

1964 Porsche 356 SC Sunroof Coupe
s/n 128987, Engine no. 811655
Champagne Yellow with Black Leather

Ferdinand Porsche’s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine output more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented huge advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. They were available in several configurations as both coupes and cabriolets, and with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the rare and extremely complicated four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.

This particular car, a rare sunroof coupe, is perhaps the ultimate specification and configuration example for the discerning collector. It is very well-optioned, beautifully restored, and superbly documented, in addition to being a long time California car. It is also a matching number engine car, that remains in its original color combination. The options indicated on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity include Golde electric sunroof, two headrests (no longer fitted), chrome wheels, camber compensating spring, 2 fog lamps, Blaupunkt “Frankfurt” radio, two loudspeakers, antenna, chrome luggage rack with ski attachment, and an exceptionally beautiful original equipment wood wheel typical of those found on the highly desirable 356 Carrera II models. Also included with the sale is a very rare sunroof wind deflector in its original shipping carton as ordered from Stoddard Porsche decades ago. The car is extremely complete as well, with owner’s manual with pouch, tools, jack, extensive service records, receipts from the restoration, and Certificate of Authenticity. The car was delivered in California new, and has been in the hands of the current owner since 1976.

The restoration was completed to the high and very correct standards. It is well-documented, and was completed in 2004. The paintwork was performed by Yeaman Auto Body Inc in Palo Alto California, while the interior restoration was done at Palo Alto Upholstery and included the front and rear seats, carpets, and headliner.

The car is presently in impressive cosmetic condition. The bodywork is exceptional, with very good fit and gaps. The paintwork is high quality, in the original color, and the panels extremely straight. The chrome is very good, with only light scratching and pitting. The lights and lamps are excellent, and the car has been fitted with much improved H4 headlamps. The car also has Hella fog lamps as shown on the Cardex. The wheels are date code matching, and are beautifully chromed.

The trunk is very presentable. The spare wheel is held down by the correct leather strap, and the correct plastic tray is in place. The engine is equally impressive, having been cosmetically refinished during the restoration. It is well-detailed with the correct decals and small details like the correct the original oil filter housing and Knecht air cleaners.

This car is presently fitted with its original matching numbers 1964 SC engine, and a recently built close ratio transmission (by Carquip of Boulder Colorado), installed in 2006, which provides exceptional acceleration. The car also comes with a second, standard ratio transmission, recently rebuilt (by Garretson Enterprises in Sonora, California). Also included at the asking price is a hotrod 1968 912 based engine which was rebuilt in 2004 by Shasta Design Engineering Co. in Lakehead, California at a cost of $8,500.

The underside is also extremely clean and solid. The car is a pleasure to drive, with a wonderful coherent feel and excellent performance from all mechanical systems. We have records on file for regular valve adjustments, fluids changes, engine and transmission rebuilds, replacement of axle seals, and many other smaller works.

Included with the sale are the tools, jack, spare parts, shop, and owner’s manuals, the extra 912 engine, records for work completed, and many, many other extra parts which may prove helpfully to the new owner.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an example of the last and best of the 356’s that is both well optioned and well documented. This is a genuine California SC and is a matching numbers sunroof coupe car that has been nicely restored. It is extremely complete and correct, making it an ideal example for the perfection-minded 356 enthusiast.
