Description

1964 Porsche 356 SC Sunroof Coupe
s/n 219602, Engine no. 812818
Ruby Red with Black Leatherette

Ferdinand Porsche`s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine output over doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented huge advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. They were available in several configurations as both coupes and cabriolets, and with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the rare and extremely complicated four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.

This particular example is a delightful and well-optioned longtime California car that has had just three owners from new. It is a matching numbers factory sunroof car, which was also delivered new with headrests, chrome wheels, Blaupunkt ‘Stuttgart’ radio, fog lights, chrome signal ring, loudspeakers, antenna, and seatbelts. The car is also fitted with a wood-rimmed steering wheel. Additionally, the car remains in its original color combination of Ruby Red with Black Interior. Still fitted with black plates, this car has been in the San Francisco Bay Area under the care of the same owner from the late 1960’s until 2009. He was the principal of San Mateo High School, and the car was a familiar sight to students for many years. He had the car mechanically restored in 2002-2003, to include a rebuilt engine, ancillaries, rebuilt brake calipers, and much other work. The work totaled $23,980.53, and at this time, the seats and carpets were redone, and the instruments rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer. Additionally, the car has been regularly maintained since, including $3900 of rebuilt oil pump and starter, new battery, new brake master cylinder, and various other work. The car was repainted in about 2009 and now has the appearance of a very nicely restored excellent driver car.

Overall, this is a superb example of the most desirably equipped 356C, and is a long time Bay Area car that has had few long term owners and accordingly has exceptional integrity. It is complete with owner’s manual, Certificate of Authenticity (confirming all of the above mentioned equipment as original to the car including the sunroof, and that the car is matching numbers), as well as over two decades of service records, and the very rare original Messko tire pressure gauge.
