Description

1964 Porsche 356 SC Coupe
s/n 217072, Engine no. P*821101*
Dolphin Grey with Blue Leather Interior

Ferdinand Porsche’s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine power output more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented significant advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. The 356C was available in both coupe and cabriolet form, each with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the complicated and exotic Carrera four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.

This particular car has had recent substantial undercarriage work performed by 356 expert David Worm, and is an exceptionally attractive example that is ready to enjoy. In total, the recent works represent an investment just over $40,000, and almost no miles have been logged since completion. The interior and paint were recently renewed and are excellent, and a compression test was just performed, which yielded figures of 160, 150, 155, and 150 pounds.

Cosmetically, the car makes a great impression, with excellent gaps and panel fit. The panels are straight throughout, and the paintwork was completed to a high level of quality and is in excellent shape. The chrome varies from good to excellent, with some pitting and light scratching in certain areas. The wheels are chromed but are showing light aging in places. The car has a number of optional features, including color crests on the hub caps, fog lamps, and Blaupunkt radio. The glass and lamps are in excellent shape.

The interior has been beautifully restored, with new dark blue leather and correct square weave carpets. The level of workmanship is universally high in the interior. The gauges and switches have a fresh appearance, and the headliner was recently renewed and is in very nice condition. The steering wheel and horn button are fresh and unmarked.

The engine compartment is clean, detailed, and shows evidence of regular maintenance. It is largely correct in appearance, with a few deviations in finishes and ancillary components such as the use of K&N air filters. The trunk is in nice shape, retaining the plastic liner tray and with a new leather tire retaining strap. The structure is sound throughout, and the car comes with tools, jack, manual, and rare Messko tire pressure gauge with pouch. The underside of the car is very presentable and structurally sound throughout. The engine is clean and the heater boxes appear to have been recently rebuilt.

The car runs and drives well. The engine starts easily, pulls well, and is competently tuned. The gearbox shifts smoothly, and the brakes are effective, pulling the car up evenly. The chassis and suspension are compliant but communicative, the steering tight, and the car is a pleasure to drive.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a high quality driver example of the most developed of the 356 line. Cosmetically attractive and mechanically sorted, this car is ready to enjoy, and is nicely equipped with an abundance of options as noted above. Included with the sale is a substantial file of records detailing all the above mentioned work, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity confirming this car as a genuine 1964 356 SC Coupe.
