Description

1964 Porsche 356 C Cabriolet s/n 161251 engine no. 715646 White with Black Leather Ferdinand Porsche`s first road going model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. The ultimate development of these years was the 356 C, which represented huge advances over initial models, including the adaptation of disc brakes. They were available in several configurations as both coupes and cabriolets, and with several motors. This particular car is a matching numbers 356C cabriolet, whose fully insulated top and back seats made for a usable and civilized way to enjoy open air motoring. This is an extremely honest example that has had one owner since the late 1980`s and appears to have covered just 70,000 miles from new. All of the receipts since the late 80`s are included, and the car has been well cared for. The car was repainted and the chrome redone in 1990, and remains presentable and attractive today. There is a continuous paper trail showing maintenance, including a front suspension rebuild, new starter, and rebuilt cylinder heads about 6,000 miles ago. Cosmetically, the car is extremely honest. The repaint was from bare metal and was an exceptionally high quality job. While not sparklingly fresh, is probably about the luster that the original paint would have been, given the contemporary paint technology. The only major strike against this car`s originality is that it is a color change from blue. There are very few signs of chipping and scratching, with just a handful of blemishes about the car, including two very small bubbles in the bottom of the right door. The body is otherwise completely free of corrosion and irregularities to the bodywork. The panel fits are all extremely even and tight, and the chrome is very nice. The glass and lenses are also very nice, as is the rubber, and all appear to have minimal mileage on them since having been replaced. The interior is in excellent condition, and appears to be original, judging by many details of the upholstery that are correct. Despite the probable originality of the leather, it is in outstanding condition, and the interior as a whole has a beautifully honest original feel to it. The carpets are a bit faded, but are the correct and quite possibly original German square-weave material. The dashboard paint and chrome are both very good, as are the gauges. The top is in presentable, original condition, fits nicely, and is easy to put up. The engine compartment is extraordinarily clean and well-detailed. It is probably the freshest-looking part of the entire car and makes a great impression. The trunk is in nice tidy and solid condition, with the correct plastic liner in good condition, as well as a tool bag with tools, and the jack. This car has most likely never had the floors, longitudinals, or battery box replaced. The chassis is remarkably rust free, with just one small quarter size area of corrosion at the right front corner of the battery box. This confirms that the car was used and stored carefully, and has benefited from its long-term West Coast ownership. The car has a tight feel and operates as it should. The motor starts easily and runs strong with no smoke and good power. The brakes stop the car evenly and the transaxle shifts smoothly with good second gear syncro both warm and cold. This is a no-excuses car that is a refreshing change from the more often seen sparklingly over-restored cars. The certificate of authenticity indicates that this is a numbers matching car, and the low original mileage and original interior make this car an irreproducible find for the collector who prefers patina to flash. With the car come the spare tire and wheel, tool roll with tools, jack, records, certificate of authenticity, photo documentation of the bare metal up repaint, and original 356 Driver`s Manual.
