Description

1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso
s/n 5163 GT engine no. 5163GT
Rosso Corsa with Black Leather Interior

An iconic example of Italian coach builder Pininfarina’s work, the 250 GT/L “Lusso” remains one of the most aesthetically pleasing Ferrari road cars ever produced. Using Ferrari’s venerable and by this time fully-developed 3.0 liter Colombo V12 engine, Lussos have the classic Ferrari ingredients and are also relatively reliable. Very much the road going version of Ferrari’s legendary 250 SWB, and with just 350 of these achingly beautiful cars built, it is with good reason that the Lussos have enjoyed fantastic appreciation in recent years.

This particular example was built in October of 1963 and sold new by Luigi Chinetti. By the mid 1970s, the car had found its way to Southern California with an owner called Fred Hill, who sold the car to an owner named Gary Newton in 1986. Newton had the car comprehensively restored to high standards from 1987 to 1990. The restoration included paintwork, rebuilt differential and rear suspension, engine rebuilt and carburetors, new chrome, rebuilt wheels, new interior, rebuilt brakes. Since then, the car has been carefully kept, always in California, and remains excellent. The car has been with its current owner in Southern California since 1999, when Fantasy Junction soId the car to him. In 2002, it was shown at the Ferrari Club of America National where the car won a silver class award.

The car remains in impressive condition, especially considering the age of the restoration. The paintwork remains glossy and was done to very good standards, although not to the level that would be required for a show car restored today. The paint remains in very nice condition, with minimal wear or damage. There are a few bubbles in the rocker by the right front jack point, as well as one bubble at the bottom of the right door. The panels are straight and fit well. The chrome is very good, with light scratches only. The glass and lights are very good to excellent, with Hella headlamps. The windscreen has light chips throughout from road use. The wheels are excellent and the car sits on correct Michelin XWX tires.

The interior is extremely nice, with excellent leather upholstery on the seats, door panels, center console and dashboard. The leather is slightly dry but shows very little wear or aging. The carpets are excellent grey wool which lightens the atmosphere inside the car. The gauges are excellent throughout, as are the switches and controls. The steering wheel is excellent throughout and the interior has a nice mellow period-correct feel throughout.

The engine compartment conveys a similar impression, with generally correct presentation and finishes throughout. It is clean overall but not sparkling and has the look of a correctly done restoration that has been carefully looked after since. There is light soiling and dust and the engine compartment would respond well to an afternoon spent detailing. The correct three ear air filter retaining nuts are in place, as are the correct ancillaries such as windscreen washer bag, horn compressor, and Bendix brake booster. The trunk is in excellent overall condition, and has been trimmed in grey wool to match the interior of the car. The spare tire wears a cover with tool storage pockets.

The undercarriage presents similarly to the rest of the car, with a generally correct and attractive appearance. The engine, transmission, and rear end are clean and correctly finished, and the structure of the car is excellent other than the small area of corrosion in the right sill by the jack point. The belly pans, which often go missing from Lussos, are still in place on this example.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a pleasantly correct and honest Lusso that received a high quality restoration and still remains extremely presentable. The car has mellowed nicely and still presents extremely well, which speaks to the quality of the restoration. The car has covered less than 4000 miles since being restored.
