1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider
s/n AR19146 Engine no. AR00601 *02769*
Red with Grey Interior

Italian automaker Alfa Romeo gained fame in the early 1930’s for their line of twin-cam, straight six powered Grand Touring cars. Following World War II, the company became known mostly for their lightweight, small displacement four cylinder cars. The 2600 Sprint marked a return to building the powerful and luxurious “6C” Gran Turismo cars that made the company famous.

The engine was a direct derivative of the twin cam of old, now displacing 2584cc and producing 170hp.The exotic all-alloy motor was rugged too, and famously served in the Italian Carbinieri’s “Squadra Volante” as high-speed “Pantera” police pursuit vehicles. European and South American racers took note, and the Sprints were raced enthusiastically with notable success. Alessandro Ragazzi won the European TT 3 Liter Championship in 1967 in a 2600 Sprint.

More well appointed than the Giulietta and the Guilia Spiders, which made Alfa Romeo a viable production manufacturer, the 2600 Spider by Touring was a refined performance touring car equipped for comfort. Better suited for long distance touring events, with their larger displacement, wider torque band, standard 5 speed transmission, and larger carrying capacity, the 2600 Spider is popular among driving enthusiasts who expect to travel hundreds of miles over several days, and arrive in comfort.

This particular car is a one-owner car that has always been in California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The car has covered just 48,168 miles from new, having been given to its current owner by his grandmother as a graduation gift from University of California, Berkeley in 1963. He drove the car for a few years before moving to Italy, where he remained for over thirty years. The car was stored indoors in San Francisco during this period, and when he returned in 1998, he had some restorative work done, including new paint, restored chrome, redone interior, new top, and rebuilt brake and clutch hydraulics. Additionally, the fuel tank was boiled out, the fluids changed, the cooling system flushed, the hoses replaced, the carburetors serviced and tuned, the valves adjusted, and a new battery installed. The car has covered about 500 miles since. In 2013, the car had an extensive service, including new belts, rebuilt heater core, fluid changes, rebuilt starter, rebuilt clutch slave and master cylinders, and rebuilt brake master cylinder.

The car makes a strong impression cosmetically, with very good quality paint that remains in excellent condition. The paint shows minimal wear, with one small scratch on the right rear fender, and some bubbling on the rocker panels. The panels are extremely straight and the fit generally very good to excellent, although the right door does not sit flush at the back. The chrome is very good to excellent throughout, as are the lights and glass. There are some hairline cracks in the left rear lens. The car retains its original Carello headlamp rings and fog lamps. The top is in great shape.

The interior is in very nice shape. The dashboard upholstery is excellent, and the gauges and switches are in very nice unrestored condition. The seats and carpets appear to have been redone and are in very good condition. The steering wheel is excellent.

The engine compartment is original, unrestored, and extremely correct. The original Solex carburetors are still in place, as is the original intake plenum and plumbing. The original VDO windscreen reservoir is also in place, and while the engine compartment is not detailed, it has a very honest and authentic appearance. The engine is well-tuned and runs great. The trunk is in fine shape, being structurally solid and retaining correct Alfa Romeo rubber mat. The undercarriage is generally solid and unrestored, save for some typical repairs to the inner rocker panels.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a low-mileage one-owner black plate California car. Never rusty and always carefully stored and driven in California, this car is a rare find and comes with workshop manual and service records from the last 15 years.
