Description

1962 Porsche 356B T-6 Super Cabriolet
s/n 155656, Engine no. P*700126*
Red with Black Interior

Iconic in both shape and performance, the lightweight and agile 356 series Porsches have been continuously sought after by enthusiasts and collectors. Initially brought to market as an update of the “A” model in 1959, the “B” series cars continued improvement with the T6 receiving upgraded features, most notably, a larger trunk opening, external fuel filler, and twin grille rear deck lid. Thoughtfully designed, the 356 B offered customers the high quality, value, reliability, and mechanical robustness familiar to Porsche enthusiasts.

This particular cabriolet is a rare late production T-6 bodied Super. The long-term, single-family ownership has preserved the integrity of the mechanical systems while dry climate location (since new) has allowed this driver quality example to remain solid throughout many of years enjoyable ownership. Originally purchased by the family uncle and residing in Oregon, the car was sold to the father of the current owner in 1980. The father passed away recently, with the son receiving the car now offering it for sale.

The overall paint is generally nice and has uniform gloss and finish. The paint was completed some time ago, but the quality and preparation was quite good, evidenced by the presentation today. All indications point to the car being originally red. The bumpers and various trim around the car are all in very nice presentable condition with no major flaws of note other than a cracked passenger side headlight lens. The emblems and various plastic lenses are also in good to nice condition. The hood and deck lid are original to the car with correct numbers on both parts, showing very good gaps. The wheels have been widened professionally, retaining the factory look, and giving the car a nice, sporty stance.

The interior is a nice combination of original and restored components displaying continuity in materials and finishes. The top is an older replacement type that has weathered over time, but is functional. The mechanical top armature moves smoothly and latches properly to the windshield frame. The convertible top cover has been more recently replaced and is very serviceable, matching the black interior. The original style instruments are all in place, showing good color and clarity along with the various switches and knobs. A modern radio has been installed without cutting the dash. A modern style steering wheel has replaced the original, but adds to the purposeful nature of the car. The carpet appears in good serviceable condition and potentially original based on the quality and consistency shown. The seat surfaces are all very nicely presented, having been recovered at some point in the recent past.

The doors, hood, and trunk open and shut smoothly; exhibiting very good fit and solid finish. The doors in particular are tight and firm, indicating they very likely are original pieces. The trunk area is well presented showing spare tire, strapping, and proper tool roll. General condition is clean and tidy. Under the hood, engine is correct for a 1962 T6 Super Cabriolet and appears to be original to this car. The engine displays stamping number P*700126* (numbers properly within the range of this serial number) and is nicely presented using largely original parts and finishes, with a few modern allowances for improved performance and reliability including a removable oil filter and cooler.

Underside inspection reveals a very tidy car that has been properly cared for, retaining the original factory floor pan. At some point, the car was undercoated to preserve the chassis. The front apron has had minor repair work performed on the valance. The suspension, various components, and proper gearbox are all preserved as one might expect from a car with long-term ownership.
The car starts reliably and settles into a smooth and throaty idle, ready for action. The gearbox operates wonderfully up and down with smooth synchros, warm or cold. Nice, even clutch movement and confident shifting are hallmarks of this car. Acceleration is brisk and confident with very good feedback in cornering. Braking is very good overall, having recently had the hydraulics overhauled. Generally speaking the overall impression is that this 356B has been properly cared for and retains structural integrity consistent with what one finds in original, long-term ownership cars. The car comes with a file of documentation dating back to the early 1980’s, records showing general repair and maintenance, tool roll, tools, and jack, and various manuals.

Wonderful colors, dynamic open driving, and rare designation, this 356B Super T6 Cabriolet offers original long-term ownership, perfect for the enthusiast who enjoys spirited driving and worry-free cosmetics.
