Description

1961 MGA Roadster
GHNL89361
British Racing Green with Tan Leather Interior

Introduced in 1955 to replace the MG TF, whose separate fenders had been current two decades earlier, the MGA was a significant step forward for MG. Retaining the key ingredients of MG’s successes, namely stylish open two-seat bodywork, robust mechanicals, and lively handling, the MGA was quite successful. The separate frame now had the floors below rather than on top of structural members to lower the car’s profile, while the B-series engine also permitted a much lower car. Selling for under 1000 pounds sterling new, the cars were affordable and sold well on both sides of the Atlantic, continuing MG’s pattern of acting as an ambassador of sports cars, particularly in the United States. In initial guise, the 1500cc variant produced 68hp, while later 1600cc cars made 78hp. The pick of the range as far as performance and exclusivity is concerned is the twin cam model, which made 108hp.

This particular example has had a thorough restoration, including a 2.0 liter MGB engine that makes approximately 125hp to 130hp. The engine is a 5 main bearing block with high lift camshaft, forged 10.8:1 Arias pistons, ARP head studs and main bolts, balanced bottom end, 2 barrel downdraft Weber carburetor, jet coated tubular exhaust manifold, twin outlet exhaust, solid state ignition system, reduction gear starter motor, new clutch, and lightened flywheel. The car has a shrouded electric cooling fan, as well as twin solid state fuel pumps. The gearbox is a 5-speed Ford T9 fully synchronized close ratio unit, other than 5th, which is .82 ratio to give good cruising performance on the highway. The brake system was rebuilt as well (with discs in the front), as well as the suspension to include new springs and rebuilt shocks. The car was also repainted, and a new interior fitted as well. The wiring was also redone, and the master and wheel cylinders resleeved. All work was performed in 2008-2009 by New England Classic Car Company, and the total bill was $32,858.11. Additionally, the car had a further $1900 in sorting work to bring it to its current excellent operating condition.

The car makes a strong cosmetic presentation. The paintwork was done to very good standards considering the car’s value, and the bodywork is attractive and presentable, although the panels could be straighter. The gaps are good throughout, other than on the trunk, which sits high and on the driver’s door. The chrome is excellent across the board, and the car is equipped with Lucas “flamethrower” fog lamps, as well as Lucas tripod headlamps. The side mirrors are Talbot items, and the car is equipped with Plexiglas wind wings. The top and tonneau are both tan canvas and are excellent, having been replaced during the restoration.

The interior is absolutely gorgeous, with high quality tan leather upholstery and a beautifully restored dashboard and instruments. The steering wheel is a lovely wood-rimmed affair, and the shift knob is also wood. The carpets are nicely done, and all instruments work properly. A modern radio with CD player has been fitted, and the car has nice rubber MG mats.

The trunk was also restored and has been fitted with new carpets and is excellent, while the engine compartment is tidy and extremely clean, as to be expected following a comprehensive restoration with few miles on it. The car has been fitted with an on board charger so it needs merely to be plugged into a wall outlet to maintain the battery. The correct warning and identification placards are in place and have been nicely restored, as have the other components in the engine compartment.

The undercarriage shows much evidence of recent mechanical work, as well as corrective metal work, as is commonly the case with English cars of the era. Certain areas of the structure could have been more professionally addressed, and there are a few small areas of corrosion. The car seems structurally sound however, and is an absolutely terrific drive. The engine is very strong and sounds great, and makes the car dramatically quicker than a standard MGA, even a twin cam. The car shifts wonderfully thanks to its modern gearbox, with great synchromesh, although it pops out of 4th gear on trailing throttle. The brakes are effective and pull the car up evenly, while the car’s steering and suspension are extremely tight. The result is a confidence inspiring car that begs to be driven enthusiastically, and without reservation, this is among the most enjoyable cars of this type that we have had the pleasure to drive.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a magnificent driving MGA that has been thoughtfully upgraded and is ready to enjoy. The car was built with both performance and reliability in mind, and the fully synchronized gearbox, upgraded cooling system, and single Weber carburetor, and modern ignition system are all aimed at simultaneously improving performance and reliability. The car has had a nice driver quality restoration and comes with MGA handbook as well as top and tonneau cover, which are both like new.
