Description

1961 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider by Touring
s/n AR 10204 *00113*, Engine no. AR 00204 *00069*
Red with Black Leather

More well appointed than the Giulietta and the Guilia Spyders, which made Alfa Romeo a viable production manufacturer, the 2000 Spider by Touring was a refined performance touring car equipped for comfort. Better suited for long distance touring events, with their larger displacement, wider torque band, standard 5 speed transmission, and larger carrying capacity, the 2000 spyder is popular among driving enthusiasts who expect to travel hundreds of miles over several days, and arrive in comfort.

This particular example is among the best in the country. It has been restored without regard to cost, and with concours judging in mind. It retains its matching number engine. Correct finishes have been applied throughout, and those parts replaced during the restoration work were replaced with period, and model-correct items. Mechanically the car performs extremely well, and the gauges and switchgear are all operational.

The body lines, paint, and chrome are all excellent. The interior has been beautifully re-trimmed in leather, with the correct wool carpets and rubber interior mats. The gauges have also been restored, and the canvas top is as-new. Like the interior, the trunk has been beautifully restored, and the correct rubber mats replaced. The car sits on restored wheels, with near new period correct Michelin tires.

Both the engine bay and the undercarriage were included in the restoration, and are in excellent order accordingly. The engine bay is very complete with the often missing window washer bag, exhaust heat shielding, among many other details, and presents beautifully. This car retains its original Solex carburetors, and factory airbox. The underside is both solid, and beautifully detailed.

The car drives extremely well. The engine produces appropriate power with virtually no smoke. The transmission shifts smoothly, both warm and cold. The brakes stop the car effectively, although some pedal effort is required. The suspension is tight and precise, while the period correct Michelin tires supply a supple ride.

Much of the restoration work was done by the previous owner, Jim Smallwood, an Alfa Romeo community member respected for his work to 2000 and 2600 Touring models. Mr. Smallwood reports rebuilding the engine during his lengthy ownership period, and showed the car extensively following his restoration work, winning several awards. Further restorative work to the mechanical aspects of the car was performed by Larry Buskirk, on behalf of the current owner and Alfa Romeo enthusiast, Martin Swig. This work included rebuilding the transmission and differential, as well as a discerned effort to minimize engine oil leaks so common to Alfas of this era. Mr. Swig also had the gauges restored, at which time the odometer was zeroed.

Included with the car are records for the current ownership period, the toolset, matching spare wheel and tire, and a cloth car cover.

As these particular Alfa Spyders have never been worth a fortune, few owners have justified a restoration to the level achieved here. This example is certainly among the nicest in the country, and represents outstanding motoring value to Italian car enthusiast looking for a beautiful example which could be concours shown, and also driven long distances.
