Description

1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster s/n 198.042. 10-002607 engine no. 198.980-10-002663 Fire Engine Red with Tan Leather Interior The 300SL was one of the most exotic cars available when it was new. Directly descended from racing cars, and chock full of innovative features, they were fast, beautiful, and expensive. Arguably the first `supercar` ever (others claim that honor should be bestowed upon the Lamborghini Miura), the 300SL has been described as the McLaren F1 of its day. Surrounded by separate frame carbureted contemporaries, the SL was truly a glimpse of the future and remains today a very special car. Their appeal is timeless and consequently, they have remained `blue-chip` collector cars that are always in demand and perhaps even culturally embedded as one of the greatest cars of all time. The roadster version was for many years overshadowed by the stunning gullwing; however, as more savvy enthusiasts have become privy to the advantages of the roadster, their values are now catching up to those of the coupes. Indeed, the increased practicality of proper wind-up windows and doors, improved drivability from the revised rear suspension, and inimitable open air experience make the roadster a more enjoyable car to use than the gullwing. This particular car, as a 1960 model, is fitted with the larger drum brakes to further improve the driving experience when compared to both Gullwings and earlier roadsters. This car is a matching numbers 84,000 mile example and remains in its original color. It has been in California for many years and shows no evidence whatsoever of any damage, damage repair, or corrosion. It has new fitted luggage, as well as its original unrestored tool roll and jack. It also has the original manual, dealer directory, and catalog in the original holder, in addition to a Becker Mexico radio and chrome wheels. The car runs superbly, having had the injection system recently adjusted and the car generally tuned. The compression was tested in November of 2007 and found to be excellent. The water pump was also recently replaced, and the car has been renewed as necessary and sympathetically kept up, rather than ever having been comprehensively restored. On the cosmetic side, the car received a very high quality repaint some years ago, as well as a high quality new interior about three years ago. As a result, the car is cosmetically excellent. The paintwork is of high quality, and there are almost no signs wear or damage: only a few very small chips and scratches. The chrome is very good to excellent throughout, with some light pitting on the door top trims, trunk lock, and taillight housings. The chrome wheels show some wear as well. The balance of the chrome is excellent as are the glass, lights, and lenses. The interior was spectacularly redone about three years ago and remains in excellent condition. A high quality retrim was performed, employing the correct pleating and square perforations of the original upholstery. The dashboard, sills, sun visors, and center console were also reupholstered in leather and are beautiful. The carpets were renewed too, using the correct square weave material. The chrome, switches, and instruments are very nice as well. The trunk is excellent, with new carpet, luggage, and luggage strap, while the engine compartment is clean and presentable but unrestored. Many of the original decals are still present, as is the VDO washer bag. This car, with its sympathetic upkeep, long time California history, and excellent extras, will appeal to the enthusiast looking for a complete, honest, and attractive car. Many of the extras are irreplaceable and worth thousands on the open market, and this car has a nice blend of originality and sparkle that is missing from the completely restored cars. As `blue-chip` collector cars 300SL`s will always be valuable and will only continue to increase in value, much as they have in recent years.
