C TYPE HISTORY

The C-Type is one of Jaguar’s most famous and successful creations. A dedicated competition variant of the swoopy and sophisticated XK120, the C-Type was converted to race use through the use of a stunning body and careful reengineering of all major mechanical systems. The bodywork is among the most beautiful ever fitted to any car, and was designed by Jaguar’s legendary aerodynamicist and stylist Malcom Sayer. The car was an instant success, winning Le Mans on its first outing in 1951, and again in 1953. It continued to use the sophisticated twin cam XK inline-6, and, for the first time in an automobile, disc brakes, which had been pioneered during World War II on airplanes. Just 52 C-Types were built, and now trade hands for multiple millions of dollars, around $13 million for a great example. Thus, it is not surprising that faithful replicas built on Jaguar chassis with Jaguar running gear are popular among enthusiasts seeking to capture the historic experience of one of the all time great sports racing cars without the massive price tag or uneasiness associated with using such a valuable car.

ABOUT THIS LYNX C-TYPE

Lynx, whose cars are highly regarded for their exceptional craftsmanship and faithfulness to the original C-Type, built this particular car. The Lynx C-Type closely mimics the factory cars, with tubular steering chassis wearing hand wheeled aluminum bodywork. This car was built in 1997 for it’s original owner, Rodney Smith, who was a prominent San Francisco Bay Area Collector and participated intimately in the build of the car by corresponding regularly with Lynx in the United Kingdom during the build. The car was shipped to its original owner in 1998, where it has remained in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was built using a 1959 XK150 as a basis and is titled accordingly, retaining the original registration number of that car, RFY 910, as well as its Swansea V5.

Included with the car is a large file of correspondence with Lynx, which includes discussion of the aesthetic details, colors, and mechanical specification. It was used extensively in Lynx’s marketing materials, including appearing as the feature car in their C-Type brochure and numerous print advertisements. After being completed, it has also been featured in multiple magazine articles. All of the documentation is included with the car, along with photographs of the car being built.

The car remains in excellent overall shape. The paintwork and bodywork were done to high standards with excellent fit and craftsmanship throughout. The very lustrous paint shows some minor wear with a few small cracks in the paint. The car is fitted with an original type air intake scoop for the Weber carburetors. The lights, lenses, and glass are excellent and fitted with Brookland screens as well as a full width aero screen. The wheels are excellent and wear Pirelli Cinturato tires.

The interior is purposeful and period correct in presentation. The leather upholstery is excellent. Other than the seats, the interior is Spartan, with silver frame, body panels, and Hardura trim. The car has four point harnesses for driver and passenger and kill switch. The car is fully instrumented, including speedometer and counter clockwise-rotating tachometer. There is also a spare spark plug holder and a handbrake.

A 4-speed Moss gearbox backs the XK twin cam six-cylinder, 3.8 liter unit with triple Weber 45 carburetors. Series III XJ6 disc brakes are used in all four corners with Koni shocks. The engine has upgraded to completion pistons and connecting rods along with a competition specified cylinder head that is ported with large intake valves. The compression ratio is 8.75:1 to allow for use of 91 octane. The suspension is correct in layout, including the rear axle. It also features an upgraded cooling system with Kenlowe electric fan. The car sports an AP Racing competition clutch and a lightened flywheel, which was balanced with the crankshaft and clutch unit. The rear end is a Salisbury unit with a limited slip.

The engine compartment display is impressive with the XK power plant and triple Webers. It is clean through with excellent accessibility. The frame and suspension are very clean with a correct vintage appearance, down to the voltage regulators and cloth covered wiring harnesses. The engine is nicely detailed but is not a fresh, show-quality restoration in terms of appearance.

Since being acquired by the second and current owner in late 2014, it has been routinely serviced and well cared for. The current owner has fitted heat resistant barriers and floor mats to make the car comfortable to drive on the streets. The materials used are period appropriate and match the original interior. A period correct number ball has been fitted on the nose and rear of the car. All switches and electrical items are in working condition, making it suitable for street or track use. Supporting invoices totaling nearly $20,000 in expenses accompany the sale.

The car is an absolute pleasure to drive and definite head turner. It is incredibly well sorted car that provides a remarkable driving experience. Starts easily when cold, and packs a punch when up to temperature. The car exhibits a coherent, solid, and trustworthy experience. The well-tuned engine is powerful and makes excellent noise. The throttle response is exceptional with the gearbox easy to operate. The brakes have great stopping power, and an excellent feel, with a nice firm pedal. The steering is direct and pleasingly quick in its hearing with the chassis and suspension providing excellent feedback and control. Overall the car is supremely coherent and inspires the kind of trust that allows the driver to drive in a spirited fashion with confidence.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautiful car that faithfully captures every meaningful element of experiencing one of the greatest cars of all time. An absolute pleasure to drive and look at, this car was built to the highest standards and represents superb value as well. It comes with extensive documentation from the build, original importation documents, and copy of the brochure in which it was featured.
