Description

1956 Porsche Speedster s/n 82244 Red with Tan Interior Just 850 Porsche Speedsters were built during 1956. All of these cars were fitted with drum brakes. This example has been expertly retrofitted with Porsche disc brakes identical to those mounted to a 356 C built in the mid 1960`s. This car has seen a comprehensive restoration. The restoration was not a show quality job, but rather an effort to keep the car in very good `driver` trim. While the car is not perfect, or 100% original, it is an excellent running example, fun to drive, makes a strong visual impression, and demands attention everywhere it goes. The repaint was a fairly high quality job done sometime before 2000, when the current owner bought the car. The body is straight, with good, consistent door and hood gaps. All the correct badging is present, and the head and taillight lenses are in good condition. The exterior chrome is generally good, with minor weathering in some places. The wheels are later Porsche units, a necessary change to fit over the disc brakes. The floors, longitudinals, and battery box were replaced, probably because the car suffered some rust damage at one time. The work was nicely done, and there is no obvious rust found on the car today. The interior has been restored sometime before 2000. The dash was repainted to match the exterior. The carpet was replaced with correct German tweed fabric, but shows some very minor discoloration in selected areas. New rubber floor mats were installed. The seats and dash have been nicely reupholstered in leather, the door panels in matching vinyl. A Carrera Speedster speedometer is fitted, along with a Nardi wood rim steering wheel. There is moderate deterioration on the chrome gauge bezels. The car has a black canvas top in very good condition with a restored top frame. The overall impression of the car cosmetically is that of a very nice `driver`, but not a show car. Mechanically, the car is very strong, save for an issue with third gear. The 4-wheel disc brakes stop the car very effectively, and are a welcome feature when using the car in vintage rallies. While we do not have a detailed service history for the car, it is clear that the engine has been rebuilt. The engine sounds good and pulls strong, and the underside is clean and dry, especially around the push rod tubes and heads. Like the underside, the engine is clean from above, and fitted with correct Solex carburetors and air cleaners. The case is not numbered, and is probably a replacement. The transmission is smooth in and out of 1st, 2nd, and 4th, but pops out of third gear. The fuel gauge does not always show an accurate reading, but the remainder of the gauges are fully operable. With the car is the jack and spare wheel, and records for the current ownership period detailing minor maintenance and tuning work. The current mileage shown is 62,650.
