Description

1956 Jaguar XK 140 Fixedhead Coupe
s/n A815658DN , Engine no. G7744-8
Black with Butterscotch Leather Interior

One of the 1950s most iconic motor cars, the Jaguar XK series have always had a strong following. XK 140s offer more leg room and more power than their predecessor, the XK 120. With a growing numbers of shows, clubs, and events catering to these cars, and a larger baby boomer audience available to appreciate them, these high-style motor cars continue to be in great demand.

This particular car appears to be a French delivery example, which was imported to California early in its life. The engine (head and block) are matching to the chassis. Sold through Fantasy Junction to the current owner in 1994, he has enjoyed the car as an occasional driver, performed considerable mechanical work during his ownership, while carefully retaining a ‘rustic driver’ presentation cosmetically.

Approximately 4,000 miles ago, the engine was rebuilt under the watchful eye of Jaguar expert, Jim Groom. Star Machine performed the lower end work, while respected machinist (and racer), Dan Marvin, rebuilt the head. The Moss 4-speed transmission was set aside (included with the sale) in favor of a more modern and user friendly Tremec 5-speed. Other work included rebuilding the gauges at Palo Alto Speedometer, and the labor-intensive installation of new a new wiring harness by Select Electrics (together totaling $9,000). The speedometer was zeroed at the time of the engine rebuild.
Additionally, a new fuel tank was installed, as were new rear springs, shocks, and a new exhaust system. Many new front end suspension parts were installed by Stu Donaldson, including the steering rack, but not kingpins. In keeping with user friendly improvements, an alloy radiator was installed, (the original is included), as was an improved starter and high output alternator.

Today, while the car may have considerable patina, it runs and drives better than many freshly restored cars thanks to the work described above, preformed by well respected specialists. Structurally speaking, it is extremely dry and solid, benefiting from its long-term California ownership. In its current trim, it makes for both a spirited ride, and an interesting conversation topic among enthusiasts accustomed to only seeing restored cars.

Included with the sale are records from the current ownership period including detailed notes on the engine overhaul, the matching wire wheel spare, the original radiator and shroud, Moss 4-speed transmission, driveshaft, and many other spares including a water pump.
