General Overview
When Henry Ford launched his fledgling car company well over 100 years ago, no one imagined that the Model T would lead to one of the most amazing performance cars of the century. Penned by Camilo Pardo, then head of the “Legends” studio, the GT40 concept car was lauded for its beauty and engineering advancements, but, despite the 2003 concept launch, industry experts doubted it would ever see production. Yet Ford shocked the public once again in 2004 announcing production delivery through 2005. In a matter of months, demand far exceeded supply as the public witnessed magazine test after test with the Ford GT besting many vastly more expensive contemporary exotics – all while being more reliable and far less costly to maintain. Just as Ford had so surprisingly done when they beat Ferrari on the racetrack, the unprecedented “one-two-three” Le Mans victory reminded everyone that Ford could once again build a supercar capable of delivering premier performance.
During the two-year production run from 2005-2006, Ford built 4,000 GTs. Anyone fortunate enough to purchase one new could choose from just four available options: a McIntosh sound system, Racing Stripes, Painted Brake Calipers, and Forged Alloy Wheels. The new design featured an aerodynamically advanced body, doors that cut into the roof for easy entrance and exit, a sweeping windshield, a visible mid-engine seen through the rear window, and intake/warm air extractors that significantly improved engine and brake cooling. The Ford GT also incorporated several innovative technologies including a superplastic thermo-formed frame, aluminum formed body panels, roll bonded floors (for increased rigidity and structural improvement), a lightweight magnesium center console, and a dizzying array of hyper-technology manufacturing processes leveraging state of the art composite materials and bonding technology employed in the lightweight frame. The resultant chassis was so resilient that it was capable of meeting modern safety requirements within a very short window of development time. Exceptional technology was not limited to the chassis alone as the mid-mounted 5.4-liter Ford Modular dual overhead cam V8 engine, equipped with a Twin-Screw Supercharger, was mated to a Ricardo six-speed manual transmission. The Ford GT delivered top numbers in every performance test with 0-60 3.3 second times, the quarter mile lapsing in 11.4 seconds, and a top speed over 205 mph.
Over the past 20 years since these cars debuted, they have become even more sought-after as collectors grow increasingly appreciative of the distinctive looks, analog driving properties, and celebrated racing heritage. Having grown significantly in value, enthusiasts continue to seek out preserved examples featuring excellent provenance and documented low mileage.
History of This Car
This Ford GT was completed at the factory in 2006 and sold to the first and only owner in June 2007 with 70 miles. One of the last built, the car was finished in Midnight Blue clearcoat metallic and trimmed with ebony black leather wrapped interior and optioned with the McIntosh stereo, racing stripes, painted brake calipers, and BBS forged alloy lightweight wheels, the car was delivered new in 2006, the final year of the first-generation Ford GT. One of very few examples from 2006 production painted in this rare color, the owner was informed it was the last car finished in this rare color. The first and only owner has since retained this GT as part of a large collection of premium performance cars while maintaining it at local Ford dealerships including interval services, fluid changes, and passing biannual California emissions tests.
Unlike so many of these cars which remain largely unused and stored in private collections, the original and only owner has driven this Ford GT 2o,000 miles while thoughtfully enhancing the performance of this car with numerous carefully selected cost-no-object upgrades including the following items:
Retaining the original speedometer and tachometer, all small gauges were replaced with new Autometer motorized units which were not used in production due to cost cutting but are considered vastly better (original units retained).
Three-piece cross drilled front rotors designed and installed by Discovery Automotive (original rotors retained).
Ford factory short shift kit (original part retained).
Leather handbrake and shifter boots replacing rubber units (original parts retained).
Accufab throttle body installed (original part retained).
Ford OEM small supercharger pulley and tune which allows for faster supercharge speed and better overall performance (original part retained).
Ahlman specified Ohlins two-way adjustable coil over damper units installed on all four corners. (original parts retained)
Automatic Safecraft engine bay fire suppression system installed.
AP Racing uprated clutch (designed with Stillen) installed (original part retained)
Two-piece wheel well liners designed and fabricated for all four corners, allowing for faster removal and less hassle than the original type.
Removed 1:33 final drive in favor of 1:39 drive which is how the car was originally designed (one of 49 kits made for this conversion). This required removing the transaxle for shipment to the authorized Ford team in Southern California for correct replacement and reprogramming for the computer (original ring and pinion retained). Note there are four settings for driving. For California emissions, this system will need to be reflashed using an OBS2 reader (included with the car).
Transmission cooler installed.
A custom-built one-of-a-kind cat-back stainless-steel exhaust system was fabricated and installed. This unique design eliminates 2,000 rpm “droning” typically found in aftermarket exhaust. Both the original exhaust and the factory high-performance exhaust are included as spares.
Custom made tubular exhaust headers have been installed (original cast iron headers included).
Installed spun aluminum rings in the seats as originally designed (similar to the original GT40) before cost cutting mandated plastic rings.
Five-point seat harnesses with correct anchor points installed (originals retained).
The McIntosh stereo system was divided into two sections (amp and speaker), one behind each seat, eliminating the large center woofer box. This modification also allows for the factory center storage cubby, that came without the McIntosh setup, to be installed between the seats.
Rear bumper removed (retained and included).
Rear exhaust finishers set to exit center rear similar to original GT40.
Rear facing back up camera installed with rear-view mirror display when in reverse (original rear view mirror retained). An original Ford dome light was installed to replace the one integrated into the original rear-view mirror.
Engine lid grilles were replaced with new billet aluminum units (original ones prone to warping have been retained).
Low profile windshield wipers installed.
Under current ownership the car participated in roughly a dozen track day events with the Lotus Club at Willow Springs, Laguna Seca, and Thunderhill. The owner had the dash pad replaced under warranty due to material deformation and the front of the car was repainted due to paint bubbling from a manufacturing flaw and stone chips on the front bumper fascia.
General Condition
Today this beautiful Ford GT presents in excellent condition with factory original Midnight Blue metallic paint on all body surfaces, desirable factory BBS alloy wheels, and all glass, lenses, and exterior body trim in excellent cosmetic condition. The upper body panels are very nice showing no warping or lifting in corners, often seen in cars that have been subjected to high heat climates. The lower body panels and front and rear bumper caps are also in excellent condition with even panel gaps. The front air dam displays typical scuff marks on the underside edges, but otherwise the front facing surfaces are in excellent condition overall. There are no chips or scratches in the gorgeous wrap around original windshield. All glass panels retain factory correct brand etches. Of particular note, the rear of this GT is delightfully free of the rear bumper and fitted with central exit exhausts. The optional alloy wheels are in excellent condition wearing a set of Goodyear Eagle 235/45R18 front and 315/40 R19 tires on the rear.
Stepping up to the driver’s door, the recessed door latch opens the distinctive roof panel and door as it swings away from the body. The interior features are refined and very well maintained. The ebony leather and assorted interior materials are smooth, tidy, and reflective of original quality with excellent seat stitching and uniform sheen to the leather surfaces. A set of racing seat harnesses have been installed, new aluminum seat rings are installed in the seats, and the optional McIntosh stereo and center mounted woofer has been removed (retained with the spares) and the speakers located behind the seatbacks. The beautifully finished dash pad, new Autometer motorized gauges, and upgraded center console are beautifully finished with fine materials and careful craftsmanship. The upgraded short shift six-speed manual is a delightful engagement to any performance enthusiast who enjoys manual shifting and foot pedal clutch action.
Under the hinged clamshell rear deck, the stout and visually delightful, supercharged V8 engine has been meticulously maintained both mechanically and cosmetically, with desirable performance upgrades performed on a cost-no-object basis including supercharger upgrade, a custom fabricated stainless-steel exhaust, and Accufab throttle body. The exposed suspension, mechanical components and detailed features are all in excellent condition throughout. Lifting the hinged front section reveals a clean and meticulously maintained storage area showing factory fresh finishes and details.
The undercarriage of the car is very well maintained with no notable damage or significant road marks. The aerodynamic factory chassis armor panels remain in place in excellent condition. The cast alloy suspension parts, and various exposed components in the underside are further in excellent condition, with clean and fresh appearance, showing only minor evidence of use. There are no signs of structural compromise to the chassis or major suspension attachment points, further confirmed by the accident-free current Carfax report.
The car starts easily, setting off the supercharged dual overhead camshaft V8 engine that resonates perfectly at idle. The improved performance features are notable when compared to standard Ford GTs offering a more responsive throttle and more immediate gains from the supercharger. Cornering and braking are on a par with some of the best track cars of this period, and yet, all this power and performance is just as easily at home cruising in moderate traffic with the radio and air conditioning on, enjoying the wide range of capabilities in this impressive sports car.
