General History

Conceived as a 1988 Chrysler Advanced Studios concept car and shown at the 1989 North American International Auto Show, the Dodge Viper was green-lighted to production after raved reviews from automotive press and performance enthusiasts eager to see Chrysler regain the Muscle Car glory days. A specialized team of development designers and engineers were assembled as “Team Viper” to bring the V10 powered roadster to production in 1992.

In 1996, concurrent with the SRII series redesign, the Viper GTS debuted. The unique design recalled the Italian “double bubble” roof and other themes reminiscent of the Peter Brock designed Shelby Daytona Coupe. More than just a reskinned Viper roadster, the all-new GTS was a formidable performance car with significant improvements to the platform and more horsepower than the earlier roadster. GT amenities included power windows, power door locks, air conditioning, and airbags. The introductory year production concluded with just 1,166 total produced for 1996 Viper GTS.

History of this Viper

According to the current Carfax, this Viper GTS was purchased by the first owner, a resident of Michigan, in February 2000. After purchase, this Viper was serviced at Plainview Dodge, Plainview, TX and offered for sale in 2004 with 11,541 miles. Mileage accrued through 2006 at 23,171 miles when the title was updated with California residence and a passing emissions test. Emissions tests successfully continued through 2009 when it was sold to the next California owners until the current owner, also a resident of California purchased this Viper in 2023. 

With fewer than 800 miles accrued over the past ten years, in August 2026, the current owner engaged Hilltop Dodge, Richmond, CA to perform a multi-point inspection and service the car including electrical and fuel diagnostic checks, review any stored codes, install ten new spark plugs, a new battery, four new Toyo tires, brake fluid flush, coolant flush including new upper and lower radiator hoses, fresh differential fluid, oil and filter change, two new air filters, power steering fluid flush, and an air conditioning freon recharge with AC testing delivering cold air conditioning to the cabin. 



Condition and Ownership

Today this Viper GTS presents in excellent condition with beautiful red paint. The finish is vivid and lustrous with smooth coverage over all body surfaces. The composite body panels are consistent with Viper production quality, and the paint finishes are consistent in the door jambs, deeply channeled front fenders, and rear wing. The door jams, inner surfaces, and the front and rear bumpers are in excellent condition, with no major marks evident on the front fascia. The hood opens and closes properly however the driver’s side hood corner at the headlight opening rests proud of the upper front bumper surface when latched. The polished 6-bolt wheels are in excellent condition though curb rash is evident along the bead edges. Toyo Proxes P275/35 ZR18 front and P335/30 ZR18 rear tires are mounted. Lenses, glass, and lighting are all in excellent condition. The emblems, script lettering, and exterior details are beautifully finished and in excellent condition consistent with the low miles. The rear glass hatch can be raised via the locking key port on the rear fascia, however the rear hatch struts will need to be replaced in order to hold the glass in the open position.


The black leather interior offers sporting details and very nice surfaces in all areas especially considering 26 years have lapsed since this car was produced. The premium leather high back bucket seating surfaces, center console, contoured interior door panels, and dashboard are in very good condition showing only minor areas of use. The driver’s side seat bolster, normally found to have stitching wear, is in excellent condition. The leather seats are beautifully contoured offering lumbar and side support ideal for spirited driving. The dashboard and white dial instrumentation operate properly as do all systems, including recently charged ice cold air conditioning, The condition of the carpeting, headliner, and rear storage hatch area are consistent with the interior overall. Under prior ownership, the stereo was replaced with a contemporary Alpine head unit, Rockford door and rear compartment speakers, and a rear bulkhead mounted Rockford Fosgate amp. The current stereo system has been disconnected.

Under the hood, the powerful and specially developed V10 engine is clean and unmodified from new, highlighted by purposeful red finished alloy castings displaying distinct insignias along with key factory stock features and the factory correct air induction system. The underside shows no visual evidence of structural compromise and all suspension mounting points as well as key frame members are in excellent condition. Correct stock factory features include the original exhaust heat shielding, correct factory exhaust, factory mid tunnel tray, and correct factory hardware.

This Viper lights off instantly with a wonderful exhaust note resonating through the rocker panel channeled exhaust. The throttle response is impressive, delivering monster torque from the capable V10 engine. The exhaust note is spot on for American power delivering impressive driving manners that even moderately skilled performance drivers can enjoy. The combination of the 6-speed manual transmission and gobs of V10 horsepower is ideal for higher speed freeway runs but also handles very well carving mountain roads. Everything you might expect from this ground-breaking sports car is embodied in this vivid red Viper.
