General History
The Porsche 930 Turbo was a design and engineering revelation when it debuted in the 1970s. From the day it was offered through decades of iterations, the 930 has continued to prevail as an icon of performance to millions of enthusiasts throughout the world. Without fanfare, the 930 arrived on the scene delivering earth-shattering performance figures obliterating former standards of excellence. After unprecedented success pioneering turbochargers in the 917 Can Am and 911-based sports cars, Porsche took the bold step of developing a reliable and capable turbocharged road car. And while Porsche's previous high performance 911, the Carrera RS was a raw and elemental homologated race car adapted for the road, the 930 was fully realized as a proper flagship: a refined car meant to effortlessly cover great distances at high speed with numerous improvements including the all-important fully galvanized rust resistant steel body construction in the 911 series.
Contemporary press showered praise over the 930s effortless ability to devour roadway in voracious gulps, particularly for those who had yet to experience the power and afterburner snap of a turbocharged car. The 930 immediately became the surprise supercar of the decade, brimming with wide fenders, rear spoiler, and hunkered down racing stance, the 930 put Porsche in a different category than it had previously occupied. In the eyes of exotic performance car enthusiasts a new contender had arrived, one that would dominate and ultimately alter the course of every future Porsche.
History of this Porsche 930
This Porsche 930 was assembled in February 1979 and finished in metallic black, 708-9-3 as stamped on the paint code Kunstharzlack plate pin-riveted to the driver’s side door jamb. Though not much is known about the history of this car, it is believed to have been delivered to a San Francisco Bay Area resident as an aftermarket alarm, consistent with 1980s technology, was installed at Marin Auto Stereo & Alarm likely early in the original ownership. The condition reveals all the hallmarks of a well-maintained and properly stored dry climate car which currently indicates 97,939 miles on the six-digit odometer. In preparation for consignment, the car was serviced at Eason Autoworks, Oakland, CA where the oil cooler supply and return lines were replaced and Motul Semi-Synthetic motor oil was added.
General Condition
Today, this Porsche 930 offers clean and correct high-driver level finishes. The paint is very nice overall with deep gloss, black metallic flake consistent with factory application. The steel body panels are straight with excellent panel fit and smooth opening and closing operation from all opening features. The trim and badges are in very nice condition, as are the lighting and glass. The side and rear glass retain the correct Sekurit brand etches indicative of factory original glass, and the windshield retains the Sigla brand etch as well. The rubber trim is in very good condition including the correct Porsche accordion bumper ends and the embossed rear wing rubber all of which are in excellent condition. Wearing a set of 7” and 9” restored Fuchs wheels, these wheels feature polished aluminum rims with black petals and black centers, and colored center crests. A set of Michelin Pilot Exalto 205/55 ZR16 front and 225/50 ZR16 rear tires are mounted.
The original Black leather interior is in very good condition displaying original finishes and components that have been admirably maintained. The leather seating surfaces on the front seats are supple, with minimal wear, though minor leather creasing and wear is evident on the driver’s left bolster and the driver’s seat bottom foam has softened a bit. The carpets are original and in generally good condition as are the rear seating surfaces and carpeted Turbo-branded seatbacks which create a convenient storage shelf when folded into the down position. The dashboard, door panels, and door caps are similarly nice and the black accent materials, steering wheel, and 4-speed shifter are all in very good condition. The headliner is original and displays some discoloration, a few torn areas, and some wrinkling to the sun visors, though not surprising given the originality and age. A modern Blaupunkt radio with bluetooth is installed in the dash, an aftermarket alarm control unit is fitted to the top of the small center console, and a discrete but novel rotating locking handbrake handle is also fitted. The VDO gauges are clear and contrasting with excellent black trim rings, crisp numeric indication, and orange needles. The switches are correct and in excellent condition, the power windows function smoothly up and down, and the sunroof operates smoothly fore and aft. The front storage area is also original showing some aging to the otherwise original finishes but revealing sound structural elements beneath the carpeting. The date coded original spare tire is included, the smuggler’s compartment is clean, and the VIN stamp is correct and matches the original driver’s side door jamb VIN.
The engine compartment is original and appears visually unmodified from stock 930 presentation. Although the engine compartment has not been restored, the overall condition is clean and well-presented given the originality of the components and features. Although the air conditioning system is currently not blowing cold air, the compressor and other AC equipment are in place and the compressor responds when activated from the cabin, along with the blower settings. The engine is believed to be factory installed as the deep single strike engine number *6890322* is in sequence with matching number engines based on similarly numbered 1979 Porsche 930s. Overall, the engine and engine compartment remain undisturbed and unmodified, though the exhaust system has been upgraded with a set of performance pipes and muffler, aft of the heat exchangers. The underside of the car is sound and presentable showing no visual evidence of damage or structural repair to the pan, rocker panels, or major suspension mounting points.
The car starts, runs, and drives as one might expect from a car that has the appearance of general care and service with understandable considerations given nearly half a decade has lapsed since new. The engine pops to life even on cold starts and the clutch engages easily for smooth first gear takeoff. Once underway, the 4-speed gearbox operates with good synchromesh and linkage. Overall, the driving experience is inviting particularly for those familiar with the 930, offering a reminder of how much fun these cars can be once a driver is mindful of the race-bred capability and ferocity offered from these desirable US market cars.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a very well-prepared Porsche 930. Finished in its original color combination, this Porsche 930 is offered with an owner’s manual and the original space saver spare tire.
