General History

Introduced in 1967 to satisfy the need for a convertible in the 911 model lineup, the Targa was designed with a removable roof under The Porsche engineering team premise that the US market would not allow for a fully open car. With the helpful structural roll bar in place and soft window rear section, open cabin driving prevailed, particularly so as this model was offered with all performance configurations. Though sales were less than expected, the rarest of the series were the 911S Targa variants. During the 1974-1977 model run, the 911S Targa was available, most notably featuring body colored front and rear bumpers, upgraded interiors, and increased horsepower.

Among the most desirable configurations, the removable Targa body design was novel and desirable when released and today continues to be sought after by collectors who appreciate the premium performance variant and highly desirable 911S Targa, of which just 2,747 were built in 1977, the final year of production for the 911S series.

General Overview

According to information shared by prior owners to the current owner and third owner, this car was sold to the first owner, a resident of the Portland, OR area. In 1987, the second owner, a Northern California resident purchased the car and kept it until 2003 when it was sold to the current owner, also a California resident. In 1997, while under second ownership, the thermal reactors damaged the heads (a known issue for these engines) resulting in the engine being replaced in 1997 with a 1978 3.0 liter unit, installed at 132,000 miles. During this time an oil cooler was also installed. Notable items and service milestones performed under current ownership include:

As a California car for the past 40 years, this Porsche 911S has regularly passed emissions tests (including the most recent in 2025), and a California Emissions Compliance sticker remains on the door jamb. Though this is a 911S model, the engine lid was replaced with an SC engine lid under prior ownership.

General Condition

Today this 911S Targa stands as a remarkable testament to the durability and longevity of the 911 series. Currently indicating 238,000 miles on the six digit odometer, this Porsche offers handsome driver level cosmetics, original side and rear glass, correct accordion bumpers, and matching black finished Fuchs wheels and Targa bar. The white paint has been well maintained, and much of it appears to be original, though some areas have been blended in including the refinished 911SC engine lid. The finish shows good gloss throughout, proudly displaying stone chip on the hood and lower valance and a few small blemishes on the midsection of the hood. The matte black trim is in very good condition overall much of which appears to be original to the car. The lenses, lighting, bumpers, glass, mirrors, accordion rubbers, and various trim and script are all in very good condition contributing to the overall satisfying original condition and surprisingly clean presentation. The panel gaps are consistent showing good closures and tight fit, even for both doors which have very good part lines. Outfitted with matching black insert Fuchs wheels, the rims are in excellent condition with no curb rash and wear a set of Michelin Premier 205/60R15 tires. The removable Targa roof, replaced in 2005, is in very good condition with the Targa bar finished in matching matte black.

The interior presents as a nice driver level car with very nice black leather seats, while the overall remaining interior black vinyl and molded black surfaces appear to be original and in surprisingly good condition. The door panels, carpeting, and side panels have a very satisfying and quality feel to the finishes, though showing evidence of use. The dashboard is particularly nice, featuring clean, detailed instruments with nice color and contrast, black dash padding, and a correct steering wheel which remains in excellent condition including the padded leather wrapped rim. The removable Targa roof is in very good condition with good headliner finish, while the black carpeting remains in very good condition protected by a set of cocoa mats. A contemporary Sony stereo unit is installed in the dash, linked to a 10 CD disc unit installed in the front trunk.


Under the hood, the engine bay delivers a correct presentation reflective of original specifications though upgraded to a 1978 3.0 liter engine (replaced in 1997) and recently freshened with new upgraded Carrera tensioners and new timing chain rails. The uprated engine is clean displaying mostly correct finishes reflective of Porsches from this era. The front storage compartment is clean and well-maintained with a correct and likely original collapsing spare tire and proper finishes consistent with original cars from this era. The factory VIN is stamped in the correct location, and the smuggler’s compartment is also in very good condition. The undercarriage is representative of an unrestored example with sound floor pans, correct suspension components, and surprisingly robust condition particularly so considering the impressive miles this 911S has covered since new.
