General History
Few cars can compare to the fury unleashed by a Porsche Carrera RS. Draped in the quintessential long nose, and trimmed with the desirable small bumper design, the iconic 911 is enhanced by the distinctive ducktail rear spoiler, wider rear fenders, and unique front air dam. The Rennsport name (race sport in German - abbreviated to RS) offered lightened construction, thinner steel, and fiberglass bumpers, combining street drivability with a racing pedigree.
When first built, Porsche sales executives balked at the possibility of selling 500 units, the Carrera RS debuted at the 1973 Paris Auto Show to rave reviews, selling not only one series of 500 units, but building a second and ultimately a third set of 500 units as Porsche enthusiasts clamored for a piece of what has now become an iconic part of sports car history.
Over the years, original Carrera RS examples have become highly valued as they enter premium collections, museum displays, and concours fields with impeccable restorations. Capturing the heart of the driving experience, a well-built replica presents a rare opportunity to enjoy driving an air-cooled vintage Porsche with the power and performance of the original without the w0rry and preservation-based restraint associated with a rare original cars.
History of this Porsche
According to information supplied by the current and prior owners, this Porsche was professionally built on a 1974 chassis backdated to represent the 1973 RS series Carrera. Originally an Oregon car, the 3.0 Liter engine was sourced from a Targa SC and fitted with Weber PMO carburetors, Pertronix ignition, and a comprehensively rebuilt transmission. The build was completed in 2007 and approximately 10,000 miles have been added to the car since completion.
The build was performed by a Porsche specialist who had built nine prior cars for the commissioning owner, with this RS replica being the 10th. A no-expense-spared build, this Porsche went on to win People’s Choice at several Central and Northern California Porsche Club events. When the commissioning owner was sunsetting his driving and event participation, he proposed giving it to the builder. Humbled by the offer, the builder offered to buy it, used it sparingly, refined a few items, and has since been in the company of other vintage Porsches in a private collection.
