General History

Alfa Romeo, among the most dynamic and mechanically advanced automobile companies, began as a specialty constructor with little interest in volume manufacturing. After the second world war, Alfa advanced from their more laborious hand-crafting processes building beautiful but limited production cars. With the war done and new technology advancing quickly, the Giulia and Giulietta entered the marketplace. Positioned as affordable and stylish cars, a youthful and enthusiastic public welcomed the new Alfas. The new models were small, sporty, fashionable, and finely trimmed, delivering an air of sophistication that young men and women craved in the fast-growing post-war boom years. Both cars enjoyed success, with strong sales in Europe and America. The twin cam in-line four-cylinder engine, synchromesh gearbox, and excellent suspension offered spirited driving coupled with elegant styling. Sales volumes advanced Alfa-Romeo into becoming one of the largest manufacturers not just in Italy but all over the world.

Following the desire for a slightly plusher version of this series, Alfa Romeo built the Confortevole (comfortable) Giulietta Sprint Veloce. Noted for their very specific and desirable features, these cars spanned chassis 1493E05834 to 1493E06611, offered as a more deluxe version of the Alleggerita (lightweight).

According to the chassis, engine, and body numbers on this Alfa Romeo, further verified by the Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificato Di Origine accompanying this car, this Alfa Sprint Veloce was produced April 8, 1958, and delivered April 16, 1958, finished in Beige banana with delivery designation specified to Hoffman Motors, New York. The certificate notes that the engine number AR1315 *30972* corresponds to the engine first mounted in the vehicle. The car remained in the states and was located in California when it was purchased by a collector in 2008 who shipped it to Germany. Under German ownership, it was comprehensively restored, repainted, and fitted with a 5-speed gearbox in place of the original 4-speed. After the restoration was completed, the car spent time in Switzerland participating in the 2016 Vernasca Silver Flag Hill Climb and was subsequently sold to the prior owner, a resident of the UK. Under their ownership, the car participated in the 2018 Gran Premio Nuvolari as well as the 2018 and 2019 Terre di Canossa road rallies. Services under prior ownership included the installation of a 123ingnition programmable distributor, rebuilding the gearbox, replacing the clutch assembly and driveshaft, and servicing the Girling secondary brake cylinders and liners.

In August 2023, the car was purchased by the current owner on the website BringaTrailer https://bringatrailer.com/list... In 2025, the current owner delivered the car to vintage Italian performance specialists Domenik’s European Car Repair, Inc., NY. The team began work on the car by removing the original 1,300cc engine and unbolting the 5-speed gearbox. While the original engine was stored for safekeeping, the 5-speed gearbox was rebuilt with an Alfaholics close ratio 5-speed internals using REM finished gears on needle bearings, GTA close ratio gears, new synchros, and new sliders. Replacing the original 1,300cc engine (retained and included with this car), a 1,300cc block from a 105 GT Junior (the later series selected being more robust than the earlier 1300 block) was comprehensively rebuilt using stock stroke with 80mm custom cylinders and pistons bringing the displacement to 1500cc. A 1600 big-valve head with Colombo cams was also installed. The 1,500cc engine build included line boring and honing, machining for new oversized sleeves, deck machining for proper profusion, new pistons, Carillo rods, performance valve springs, lightweight (non-alloy) flywheel, cross drilled crankshaft, dual Weber DCOE40 carburetors, balancing for the rotational assembly, and a performance header and exhaust. Additionally, the current owner updated the interior with Zagato seats (original bench seat included) including new seat mounting tracks, a set of 5 Alfa SZ wheel rims with Avon tires, a freshly rebuilt rear end, new front and rear springs, new Koni shock absorbers, new wheel bearings, new brake lines, and modifications for the backing plate to fit the new differential. Work at this time totaled more than $75,000.00.

Cosmetic Overview

Today this Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce Confortevole presents in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition offering a very satisfying combination of delightful visual presentation and spirited driving manners. The paint is glossy throughout with excellent coverage showing only minor imperfections as one might expect since the restoration was completed fifteen years ago. The doors, hood, and trunk display excellent panel gaps with responsive closure and smooth operation. The grille and bumpers are beautifully finished with excellent fit to the body contours. The grille openings are symmetrical, and the center grille is flanked by yellow lens road lamps mounted to the front bumper. The glass is in excellent condition with no significant scratches or chips, with the side pieces bearing the Securit brand marks. The taller series tail light lenses and front turn indicators are in excellent condition as are the delicate script lettering and badges. A set of silver painted SZ wheels are correctly finished and in excellent condition, fitted with a set of Avon 185/70 R15 radial tires. As many of these cars often lack the right wheel and tire combination, the stance is spot on, reflecting the sporty nature of this performance coupe further benefiting from recent suspension and brake work completed in November 2025.

The interior displays tan vinyl finishes installed during the restoration, now enhanced with a pair of competition style Zagato seats finished in red vinyl with white piping and fitted with vintage style lap belts. The overall interior presence is comfortable and in keeping with original specifications, including the period correct bucket seats which are a welcomed improvement when engaged in spirited driving. The interior is finished with correct details including matching door panels, correct carpeting, and correctly finished rear storage compartment area. The dashboard is very nicely finished including the correct 8k tachometer. The gauges display excellent color and clarity on all three dial faces and a Conrero emblem is affixed to the glove box door. The interior chrome trim is in excellent condition as are the original stamped and etched door sills. The trunk is correctly restored including a black rubber floor mat, fuel filler cap, an original type jack, and a modern 12V battery.

Under the hood, the engine compartment is consistent with finishes reflective of original series Alfas of this period but thoughtfully updated with the 1.500cc engine. The engine is topped with a crinkle black finished twin cam cover, a correct intake manifold, proper air intake housing, a correct cast aluminum air intake plenum, and a pair of Weber dual throat 40DCOE carburetors. Hoses, wires, and other soft items were replaced when the engine was installed in 2025, here too reflective of original specifications. The underside of the car presents in excellent condition revealing recent care given to the brake lines, fuel lines, new suspension components, fresh rear end, and a recently replaced exhaust system. The alloy castings and suspension components appear to be in excellent condition and there are no visual signs of structural compromise to the chassis or suspension mounting points. Inner rocker panels and jack points all appear sound and in excellent condition.

Driving Impressions

Having benefited from the installation of a professionally rebuilt and fresh 1500 cc engine, this Alfa starts easily, idles smoothly, and delivers a vastly improved driving experience. The 1500cc engine delivers superb throttle response, is well-tuned, and offers comfortable cruising at a range of speeds including highway touring speeds greatly eased by the 5-speed. More spirited driving is experienced carving mountain roads engaging the Alfaholics close ratio gears and motivating the Colombo performance cams. The chassis is well balanced, steering is responsive, and the drum brakes bring the car down with even pedal pressure while the gearbox shifts smoothly with excellent synchromesh, warm, or cold. Overall, the handling, engine response, and chassis offer an engaging and memorable driving experience. With the added power of the 1500cc engine, it’s easy to see why this series Alfa Romeo continues to be popular with enthusiasts who enjoy driving their cars in rallies and road events.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-maintained, rare Confortevole, sensitively upgraded to deliver both an authentic and dynamic driving experience. Ready for show or club events, this Alfa Romeo offers all the promises of passionate Italian motoring and sporting excitement.
