Description

1972 Ferrari 246 GT Dino
s/n 03874
Red with Black Leather Interior

Named for Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredino, who died in 1956 at the age of 24 as the result of muscular dystrophy, the Dino was, fittingly, a 'baby' Ferrari that was dimensionally smaller and more nimble than any other street Ferrari. Its mid-placed engine was aFerrari first for a street car, and the engine itself is a gem: a lovely quad cam V6 that reflected the lessons learned from producing V6s for Dino race cars like the 206 SP. The styling for the car was done by Pininfarina, and remains to many one of the most beautiful and exotic Ferraris of the period. Certainly the view from the driver's seat over the two prominently curved fenders is one of the most evocative roadgoing driver's seat views.

This particular car was delivered new through Luigi Chinetti Motors to Samuel Jajich of York, Pennsylvania. He kept the car for 37 years, until 2009. A comprehensive service was formed by Algar Ferrari in 2010, and the interior carpets and seat upholstery renewed at that time as well. In April 2014, the car received further servicing with Boston Sportscar Company, including compression check (170-175psi on all six), oil service, brake fluid flush, new gearbox oil, and new spark plugs. The car received further maintenance and new tires in August of 2014. The car is complete with original books set including:
Dino books holder
Operating, maintenance, and service handbook
Consumer information insert
USA version supplement
Parts catalog

The car makes a strong cosmetic impression with excellent fundamentals. The body is straight and solid, with excellent fit and gaps. The paintwork is attractive and was done to very good standards. It makes a good impression although close inspection reveals some swirl marks and other minor surface imperfections. The chrome is excellent throughout, as are the lights and glazing. The wheels are in very good condition, with some minor cosmetic blemishes and some deterioration to one of the center caps.

The interior is excellent overall with recent carpets and leather to the seats. The door panels are original and are showing some fading but are in good physical shape. The original dashboard trim is also in place and has survived very well considering how fragile the original dashboard material in these cars is. The vinyl trimmed areas such as the door caps, sills, center console, and A pillar trim are excellent. The switches and instruments are in similarly nice condition.

The engine compartment is in nice driver condition and is clean with some minor wear to painted surfaces but attractive and correct overall presentation. The trunk is trimmed with correct carpet which appears to be original. The plastic trim and jambs are both very nice. The front compartment is in very nice original condition, with very nice plastic, correct spare, and clean overall presentation.

The car is a pleasure to drive. The engine is well-tuned, makes good power, and sounds absolutely fantastic. The gearbox works well, with good synchromesh, and the clutch grabs positively. The steering is tight and the chassis wonderfully nimble and communicative in a way that gives the driver the confidence to drive enthusiastically and provide an entertaining and rewarding experience.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an excellent Dino. A cosmetically attractive example, this car has great history, with one long term owner for 37 years, and is a joy to drive. Complete with books, the car is nice enough to display with pride virtually anywhere, yet not so nice to discourage its regular use.
