1951 Allard K2 Roadster
s/n 91K1841
Red with Black Interior

During the thirties Sidney H. Allard built several specials. After World War II, the Allard Motor Company was formed and Allard produced machines using the Ford Flathead V8. Later Allards used a wide variety of American V8’s including Cadillac, Chrysler as well as the basic Ford and Mercury flatheads, some with Allard’s own cylinder heads and intake manifolds. Allard automobiles featured prominently in early post-war sports car racing, competing in events such as LeMans, Tour of Sicily, Monte Carlo Rally, in Europe, and the main events of the day in the United States, such as Watkins Glen, Sebring, and Pebble Beach.

The K2 model had a longer wheelbase than the K1 and a split front axle with coil springs which helped the roadholding ability. Produced between 1950 and 1952, only 119 K2 models were completed, most with the Ford V8 flathead.

This original left hand drive example was shipped from England December 12, 1950 and sold to R/P motors in New York. Originally the car was black with red leather, and delivered with a Ford V8 #908980, delivering 100hp. Like many others, this Allard was later upgraded with a more powerful overhead valve motor, in this case a Mopar 383. The first owner was Fred Ashe, who was the secretary of the Sports Car Club of America Eastern division. The next owners were, Bill Crutchmier, Dan Lawery, Tom Turner all from Texas and Eckard Evers a German fellow who lives in California. Mr. Turner was the registrar of the Allard Club and also did some racing in an Allard. This car was purchased by Mr. Evers about 1998, and received considerable work to prepare the car for vintage racing and rallies. The car competed in and finished in the 2000km durch Deutschland in 1999 as well as the California Mille Miglia in 1999. Documents and receipts for the work accompany the car, as well as an original Allard K2 brochure.

This car is fitted with the knockoff wire wheels with Pirelli 185/70 X16 tires, unlike the other K2’s we have handled that have the bolt on standard wheels. The current 383 motor should have 10 to 1 compression, 420 lb-ft or torque, and develop 315hp at 4400rpm. The body and paint are excellent, with good panel fit, and no evidence of rust, with only normal wear and tear flaws. The dash is extremely nice, and appears correct. The steering wheel, and chrome are generally good but showing the patina of age. The interior done very nicely in black leather. The black canvas top and side curtains are in very good condition. The engine compartment and trunk are neat and clean, but not detailed for show. There is a tonneau and several boxes of parts that accompany the car in the trunk.

The car runs strong and there is a coherent feeling to the package. The power is well beyond what you would expect in a 1951 automobile, and one should exercise care and not be overly enthusiastic with throttle application. The car should provide the new owner with ease of maintenance while delivering performance not normally found in a car of this age. This Allard should be a welcome applicant to many of the world’s great events.
