Early 911’s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. Until quite recently, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car’s life very difficult today. All early 911’s have appreciated tremendously in recent years, and the earlier short wheelbase cars (1968 and earlier) have seen particularly strong interest. Of these cars, the 1967 911S is perhaps the most desirable, thanks to its combination of the charm of the earlier cars with the performance and equipment of the later cars.

Introduced for the 1967 model year, the 911S featured a comprehensive range of performance enhancements, including revised carburetion and camshafts to yield no less than 160hp from its 1991cc’s, a remarkable specific output for the era. The S package also encompassed the chassis, with the first fitment of the now legendary Fuchs forged alloy wheels, ventilated brake discs, Koni shock absorbers, and enlarged sway bar. The interior and exterior also received special treatment, in the form of a leather rimmed steering wheel, basketweave dashboard trim, thicker deco strips, and special badging. 1968 models were substantially the same, but lost the delicate door handles and lovely green font gauges with chrome bezels that were unique to the 1967 and earlier 911s.

This particular car is one such 1967 911S, a very solid example that has seen some competition preparation and presents and drives as a delightful and solid example of this desirable car. It remains in its original color of light ivory, and was prepared for use in CSRG events in the late 1990’s by its current owner, who has had the car for about 15 years. It was prepared in a manner as to preserve its streetability. It was fitted with a roll bar and had the interior trim partially removed, and also had a fuel cell and front strut tower brace installed. A full plumbed in fire extinguisher system was also fitted, and the car sits on deep 6” fuchs wearing Yokohama A008 R-compound tires. The engine has five CSRG events on it and is of the correct type and series, but is a non-matching unit. It was fully rebuilt and has about five events on it. New Koni shock absorbers were fitted as well, as well as Turbo tie rods and dual circuit brake conversion. There are invoices included for all of this work.

Cosmetically, the car has plenty of patina, which contributes to its functional and usable aesthetic. The paint shows wear and aging in places, and the lamps are faded and cracked, but the body is quite solid and straight, and as the photos demonstrate, the car still has a great look and stance to it. The rubber is aged, other than the tires, which are excellent, and the wheels are nicely finished. The body panels are substantially free of corrosion, with just a few areas of light non-structural bubbling. The owner of the car reports that the car has had no significant corrosion repairs, other than around the base of the rear windscreen, where a new panel was welded in. The car retains its original floors, rockers, and battery box, all of which are very solid.

The interior has a similar functional patina to it, with no carpets or headliner present. The car is fitted with lightweight door panels, and the dashboard upholstery is past its prime. The instruments and switches are in fine shape, including the green gauges, and the correct basket weave dashboard and 911S badge are present still. The roll cage is a substantial affair, and the harnesses are in good shape and appear to be fairly recent. Much of the trim that was removed is boxed with the car, including the seats, steering wheel, sun visors, door panels, inner rear quarter panel trims, arm rests, window winders, interior lamps, safety belts, and some carpets as well.

The engine compartment and trunk are functional and relatively tidy. The trunk is extremely solid throughout, including the battery box, and the car is fitted with a fuel cell, fire extinguisher, and strut tower brace. The inner fender panels are straight. The engine compartment is also tidy, with K&N filters with rain guards atop the Webers. The car retains its correct red fan shroud as well.

We cannot stress enough what a superb driving example this is. The engine is well-tuned, the gearbox works properly, and the chassis has a wonderfully solid and unmolested feel. The car corners well, and makes absolutely fantastic noise. In short, this car is everything that an early 911 should be: visceral, communicative, nimble, and reassuringly solid.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an early 911S, an ideal example to use and enjoy. While the car has some cosmetic needs, it is a superb example in all the areas that truly count. Structurally and mechanically, the car is in delightful shape, while the driving experience of the car reminds the driver why 911’s are so universally admired as sports cars. That this is a 2.0 liter SWB first-year 911S adds further appeal, and this is an ideal example to use and enjoy as is, or on which to perform a sympathetic cosmetic restoration as you go. The car comes with many original parts, which will doubtless prove to be useful for the new owner.
