1965 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 327/375hp Fuel-Injected Coupe
s/n 194375S113507, Engine no. 5113507 F0302HN
Ermine White with Black Interior
Introduced for the 1963 model year, the C2 generation of Corvette was an instant hit. The car carried over the excellent engines from1962, but the remainder of the car was new, with now iconic styling and independent rear suspension. In 1963 and 1964, all cars were equipped with 327cid engines, and the most powerful of these was the variant equipped with Rochester fuel injection. This option commanded a significant premium (over 10% of the base price of the car) and was the most expensive option available other than the Z06 option. In 1965, the Corvette received disc brakes all around for the first time, addressing a longtime area of criticism of the car, particularly considering its significant power ratings. 1965 also marked the arrival of the 425hp 396cid big block engines, which was a more cost effective way to big horsepower than the injected small-block since the big block engine was a $292.70 option and fuel injection was a $538.00 option. Thus, with only 771 fuel injected cars built in 1965, the option did not appear on 1966 models, and it would not be until 1983 that fuel injection returned on the Corvette. Consequently, a fuel-injected 1965 Corvette is a very collectable car since it is the only year in which both fuel injection and disc brakes were available.
This particular car is equipped with AM/FM radio, telescoping steering wheel, power brakes, power windows, 4-speed manual transmission, and transistor ignition. It was completed on Tuesday the 16th of March 1965, and has body number A2327, indicating that it was made by A.O. Smith Inc. (Dow Chemical) of Livorna, Michigan, who supplied a limited number of bodies to supplement the St. Louis plant that made most of the bodies. This car has been in the San Francisco Bay Area of California for many years, having been treated to a frame off restoration in the mid 1990’s. Following the completion of the restoration, the car was not driven, and sat in careful storage until Fantasy Junction acquired it.
Cosmetically, this car is in very nice shape. The restoration was completed to high standards and the car presents extremely nicely. The paintwork is very nice, with almost no signs of wear or damage. The chrome is excellent, as are the wheels and glass.
The interior is also very nice. The upholstery is excellent, as is the dashboard. The carpets are very good, and instruments and switches are excellent as well. The electric windows operate marvelously—in a way that shocks those familiar with contemporary Ferraris. The paint is chipping in areas on the seat belt latches, and the door jambs would benefit from detailing. The door panels are excellent.
The engine compartment is extremely clean and has been very nicely detailed. Correct finishes are applied on the engine, and the components are not over-restored. The car is still equipped with its matching number fuel injection unit s/n 2863. The underside is also extremely clean and detailed to similarly high standards.
This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a very rare fuel injected disc brake Corvette Sting Ray. One of just 771 built, this coupe is in superb shape and is nicely equipped and beautifully presented.
More to come.
