1966 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage
s/n DB6/2513/L/N, Engine no. 400/2507/V
Aston Martin Racing Green with Black Leather

Introduced at the 1965 Motor Show, the Aston Martin DB6 was notable as the first model to be engineered following a factory move from Feltham to Newport Pagnell. From the front, the final version of the DB6 looked almost identical to that of the DB5; however, the tail treatment of the DB6 included a Kamm-style rear spoiler inspired by Aston Martins racing efforts in the era. The DB6 was the company’s signature road car of the times with just over 1200 examples produced. Very few of these were delivered from the factory with the desirable Vantage option package which included triple Weber carburetors and a higher compression cylinder head. In Vantage trim, the 4.0L DOHC straight six is quoted as producing 325 horsepower. The DB6s boasts numerous technical advancements over the DB5, including a 5-speed ZF transmission, slightly longer wheel base for increased stability at high speed, and improved aerodynamics.

This particular example is a remarkable car in terms of its options, history, and condition. Sold new in San Francisco as a left hand drive car and factory equipped with the desirable Vantage option package and restored with rare aluminum Borrani wire wheels this car is represents the “holy grail” for DB6 enthusiasts. Remarkably, it has remained in the same family since 1968. Today, this wonderful matching numbers example is best described as an exceptionally well cared for, California car from new with beautiful, fresh paintwork and a marvelously detailed and solid undercarriage.

The car has recently seen an exceptionally high quality repaint in Aston Martin Racing Green and makes a show-quality impression on arrival. The body panels, particularly the doors and rocker panels which are impressively straight and show no signs of rust or rust repairs. The gaps are tight and even throughout the car and we see no evidence that this car has ever required significant repairs. Much of the gasketing appears to have been replaced as part of the repaint. The brightwork also has a fresh luster, with very few marks anywhere. The lenses window glass, including the windscreen is excellent. The car sits on nice aluminum wire wheels with modern Michelin tires.

The engine bay has been extensively restored and makes a wonderful presentation. The headers have been powder coated with special heat resistant materials, and the valve covers have been painted in a color typical of the era. The engine remains dry, and shows all the signs of a well restored and maintained car. The underside has also been restored and remains very well detailed. It is clear that this has been a fair weather car since restoration. The floors, rockers, and trunk floor and exceptionally solid, and look to have been this way throughout the life of the car.

The interior has been selectively re-upholstered, and in excellent condition considering the age of the automobile. The seats and wool carpets show very minor aging, while the dash sparkles with factory instrumentation in impeccable order. The dash has been painted to match the body color. The headliner has also been included in the restoration process. The door panels and dash pad appear to be original upholstery, which speaks highly to the intact nature of the car prior to the restorative work performed. This DB6 is fitted period typical radio.

The vast majority of the restoration work was completed by Raffi Najjarian at the Pit Stop here in the San Francisco Bay Area, starting in 2003. Raffi stripped the car to bare aluminum and repainted it in its current Aston Racing Green. The engine was rebuilt, as was the transmission. The suspension was restored with new custom springs and fresh bushings where necessary. The fuel tanks were restored, and new float mechanisms installed. A new stainless exhaust system was fitted, as was a new windshield. A new wiring harness was sourced from the UK, and the gauges were restored. The window motors were rebuilt. Significant attention was paid to the final sorting after the restoration was complete. To date, the car has approximately 500 miles since the work was finished.

As would be expected from a freshly restored car, the driving experience is absolutely fantastic. The car starts easily and runs strong with good, linear power delivery and no smoke. The chassis has a taut and stable dynamic, and the steering is precise. The brakes are effective, and the transmission shifts smoothly. When driving a well restored Aston Martin of this era, one is reminded of what a high quality automobile can indeed feel like.

With the car comes the spare wheel and tire, an Aston Martin workshop manual, and selective records for the work mentioned above and for the current ownership period. Produced in limited numbers similar to Ferrari’s Daytona coupe, Aston Martin’s DB6 is rare and desirable collector’s car. In Vantage specification, and equipped with Borrani wire wheels, this restored example is absolutely at the top of the charts and sure to make its new owner proud at every classic car gathering he attends with it.
