1967 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint Zagato
s/n AR 856048
Red with Black Interior

Thanks to its expressive styling, reduced weight, and rarity, the 2600 Sprint Zagato is the most desirable of all the 2600 variants. With a 300 lb. lighter curb weight and shorter wheelbase, it is more enjoyable to use than the 2600 Sprints by Bertone, yet retains that fantastic inline-six growl, which is especially lovely on this car due to its triple Weber carburetors. One of just 105 built, this is a very rare example which is basically unmolested and drives like the proverbial dream. It has been marvelously sorted, and comes with a reprinted manual, a spare engine, and a large group of miscellaneous parts.

Cosmetically, the car is very presentable, having seen some refurbishment in the past. The body is extremely straight and nearly rust-free, with just a few blemishes near the bottom of the passenger side door. The car wears a six-digit California blue license plate from the 1970`s, confirming that the car has been in the mild California climate for the majority of its life. The gaps are very good throughout and the panels exceedingly straight. The car was repainted some years ago and is now showing a few cracks and light checking, but remains presentable. There is one small dent in the right door and there are some scratches on the roof just in front of the rear windscreen. The chrome is also presentable, but close inspection reveals light to moderate pitting and light scratches. The glass and lights are very good throughout, including the Cibié headlamps. All of the rare and difficult-to-find trim pieces and badges are present, from cloisonné grille badge to the Zagato fender badges to the 2600 SZ trunk badge. The wheels, which are unique two-piece units with steel centers and alloy rims, are excellent. They appear to have been restored and have been fitted with correct new Michelin tires.

The interior is generally excellent and is representative of the honesty and completeness of the car. The seats are in very good condition, with one small tear in the driver`s seatback and some cracking to the piping. The evocative twin binnacle dashboard is outstanding with excellent chrome and wood. All are in very good unrestored condition and function correctly. The various knobs and switches are all present and in excellent condition; even the radio blank off plate, which wears `2600` script, is present and in very good condition. The upholstery on the dashboard and upper console is excellent with no tears, shrinkage, or discoloration. The various smaller components are all present and excellent including the visors, rear view mirror, and passenger grab handle. Even the ashtrays function without fuss. The headliner is quite possibly original and has been repaired but remains wavy. The door panels are excellent, both in terms of operation and condition. The carpets are excellent, and even the pedal pads are superbly preserved.

The engine compartment is in very good unrestored condition. The engine is dry and the three Weber carburetors are a beautiful sight. The VDO washer bag is still present, as are the original FIAMM horns and compressor. There is much evidence of recent work, above and below, including new fuel pumps and exhaust system. The correct intake plenum and piping is still installed, as are the Fispa stickers on the air filter canister. The hood liner is in excellent condition with the correct decals and plaques still present.

The trunk is in similar unrestored but highly complete condition. A matching restored wheel with tire is held in place with correct leather straps and the jack is still in place. The carpeting appears to be original and is showing wear in some places.

The greatest pleasure in this car is using it. Even the doors shut in a marvelously satisfying way. They do not require undue pressure, nor do they rattle. They simply shut with an immensely pleasing and solid combination of thud and click. The driving experience is similarly satisfying. The car feels tremendously solid and whole, in a way that a car that has been completely disassembled never seems to manage. It responds to bumps with complete composure and without complaint. The gearbox operates marvelously, including the second gear synchromesh, even when cold, as does the clutch. The engine feels gutsy, sounds great, and pulls enthusiastically through the rev range. The brakes work both evenly and effectively, and are particularly strong and capable.

This is one of those rare cars that has so much depth that it impresses the beholder more and more as time goes on. The harder you look, the more you appreciate the car. In addition to being an example of a very rare and desirable Zagato-bodied car, this particular car is unrepeatable because of its overwhelmingly original feel. Every detail seems just right and this car truly captures the essence of what makes these cars so captivating and pleasurable to drive.
