1974 BMW 3.0 CSa Sunroof Coupe
s/n 433538
Silver with Dark Blue Interior

Thanks to the financial stability provided Neue Klasse cars (the most well-known of which is the 2002), BMW was able to return to making larger cars in the late 1960s. Available as both sedans (known as the Bavaria in the United States), and swoopy pillarless coupes, these large six-cylinder cars were both handsome and robust. They were available in a number of configurations in terms of engine size, fuel delivery, transmission type, and other options.

This particular 3-owner car is fitted a carbureted three litre variant of BMW`s venerable M30 engine, the largest size available in these cars, aside from the racing variants. This engine was all-new at the time and is a wonderfully torquey and lustful motor that would survive in various forms until 1992, when BMW finally chose to replace it with their first V8`s since the 1950`s. This car is also fitted with an automatic transmission and sunroof, which when combined with the elegant pillarless styling makes the car a superb cruiser. However, the car also has some thoughtful performance-oriented CSL-style upgrades including updated wheels, Alpina steering wheel, Corbeau seats, and Hella H4 headlamps. To complete the upgrades, a 5-speed transmission is also available.

This is a three-owner car that has been in Northern California for a very long time. Service records from 1979 to present are included. This car has also seen substantial refurbishment to bring it to its present excellent condition. As a 1974 US model, it was originally fitted with `diving board` impact bumpers and side marker lamps, both of which were removed when the car was recently repainted. This process was photo documented and a disc with digital pictures is included with the car. The minor rust that was found was rectified, and the paint used was the correct Sikkens in Polaris Neu Silver, the cars original color. The front shock towers are solid and have never been redone a tremendous rarity among these cars that speaks to this cars solidity and long time California ownership. In the rear, the car is now fitted with much more attractive chrome bumpers seen on earlier cars, while in the front, there is no bumper at all fitted, and the car is ready for the installation of a CSL spoiler, which is included with the car. A CSL fiberglass rear bumper is also included. At this time, a new BMW windscreen was fitted, along with new rubber seals front and rear, and a new sunroof seal. The carpets have also been replaced with material of the correct type.

As a result, the car is cosmetically very nice. The paintjob is generally an excellent job, appropriate to the value of the car, with minimal wear since its completion. There is one chip of significance that has been touched up on the right door, a scratch on the sunroof, and a few file marks visible. There is also a blanking plate on the top of the right rear fender from the radio antenna. The chrome is in very good condition throughout, with light scratching but no hazing or significant pitting. The glass and lights are excellent, as are the wheels.

The interior is very nice as well. The Corbeau seats are very comfortable and sporting, and the new carpets were well-installed and of the correct material. The headliner is very nice though the sunroof panel has not yet been installed and is in the trunk. The remainder of the interior is unrestored but very well preserved. The dashboard is excellent with no cracking, and the wood is very good, with minor nicking and a couple of small cracks noticeable. The gauges are excellent and all the various switches and knobs are present and intact. The centre console and door panels are very good. The rear seat leather has some tears. The original seats are included.

The engine compartment and trunk are both unrestored but are on the whole presentable. There is some minor cracking to the trunk liner but the toolkit is quite complete.

Mechanically, the car is ready to go. The engine was rebuilt some time ago using the original block, but with a head from a 1981 model car, which is not as prone to cracking as the originals are. The car has electronic ignition and still retains the original Zenith carburetors. The front suspension has been rebuilt and is very tight, and the underside recoated to protect it. There are pictures of the undercarriage from both before and after this process. The car is fitted with Bilstein shock absorbers that are slightly firmer that the stock equipment, and the rear muffler is new.

Consequently, the car is a very fine drive. It is both relaxing and engaging to use, and keeps up with modern traffic handily.

This is a great opportunity to acquire one of these elegant coupes. Indeed, Automobile Magazine recently voted this car to be among the 25 most beautiful cars ever built. This particular example has been thoughtfully sorted and is unique among classic cars for its robustness and reliability. Unlike the Italian and English classics, this car could be confidently used every day, as many of these coupes still are. The car is ready to be enjoyed and represents a superb blend of relaxed cruising and sporting flavor in a truly timeless color combination. With all of these redeeming qualities, these cars are sure to appreciate as more people become privy to their beauty and usability, and as the number of good surviving examples decreases.
