1974 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super Nuova
s/n AR10526*000134*
Aubergine with Cream and Aubergine Interior

The first Giulia Ti was introduced in 1962. The `Ti` nomenclature referred to a class of Italian saloon car racing known as `Turismo Internazionale`, and had previously been applied to higher-performance versions of the 1900 and Giuletta saloons in the 1950s. The Giulia Super model was introduced in 1965. It transferred the technology from the racing TI Super to a road car, to make the most successful Giulia saloon. 1570 cc engine with two double-choke Weber 40DCOE carburetors for a milder, but torquier tune than the TI Super. These cars featured a new dashboard with two large round instruments (speedo and tachometer), and sportier wood steering wheel, and All-around disc brakes, among other changes. For 1968, there was a suspension update, including revised geometry and a rear anti-roll bar. The Giulia Super range was re-released in 1974 as the Nuova Super range. The cars differed little from their Giulia Super predecessors and bore the same Tipo numbers with an S suffix. The Nuova Supers are the most advanced and refined of the Giulia Ti/Super series.

This restored example is a desirable European model, sold new to Portugal, and equipped from the factory with twin Weber carburetors rather than the often difficult to tune Spica fuel injection system fitted to US delivery cars. As a European example, this Giulia Super also has smaller, more attractive side marker lights, and amber driving lights. It was imported into the US as a restored example around 2004 and purchased by the current owner in 2006. Currently the car shows just over 29,000 kms, which could very well be the total mileage from new, although records are not available to confirm this.

This particular Giulia Super is an exceptional example in every way. The cost to duplicate the restoration work alone would greatly exceed the asking price. The car can be described as a casual or regional level show car, while remaining functional enough to use as a daily driver.

The uni-body is incredibly straight and solid. The door shut is crisp and tights as a low mileage car would be. The paintwork, done in the original color, is very good and has a fresh appearance throughout, and is without any major flaws. Much of the body gasketing appears to have been replaced at the time of the repaint and is virtually new. The chrome and stainless brightwork is straight and nicely polished, and the glass and lenses are in excellent condition throughout. Easily removable vinyl decals have been applied behind the front wheel arches and to the rear window. This example sits on like-new `penta-mag` Cromodora Alfa Romeo wheels.

The interior has been restored and reupholstered to better like-new standards. The dash and steering wheel wood is excellent, as are the gauges, gauge bezels, and headliner. The carpet appears to be the original material, and is in excellent condition considering. This car has been discreetly fitted with an XM radio unit while a period style in-dash radio has been sourced and installed. The trunk is in exceptional condition with very good rubber mating.

The engine bay, while not cosmetically restored, shows signs of much recent work, and is mechanically sound and complete with the factory Weber air-box.

Mechanically, the car is a joy to drive. The brakes, transmission, engine, and suspension are all exceptional. There is a very minor driveline vibration, which is almost unnoticeable at most speeds. It is almost impossible to keep from smiling while operating the car! All the gauges are functional, including the clock.
Recent work includes replacing the clutch and flywheel (December 2004) complete rebuild of the transmission and replacement of the throw-out bearing (May of 2007), engine rebuild including lower end bearings, pistons, valves, etc (by Alfa Center in October of 2007), and the replacement of the rear brake rotors and pads (November of 2007). Additional service work in the form of a fluid change, carburetor rebuild, and ignition system sorting has been performed on behalf of the current owner by Larry Buskirk over the last few months.

With the car comes an original owners manual, the jack, factory supplied tools, spare tire and wheel, an extra set of keys, and records back to 2004 detailing the work described above. We cannot stress enough what a wonderful example this is. In short, it is the sort of car that you’ll want to keep forever.
