1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal S
Gold with Brown Cloth Interior
The Montreal is arguably the most exotic series production automobile that Alfa Romeo ever built. Employing a detuned version of the quad-cam fuel-injected dry sump V8 from the legendary T33 racer, 5-speed ZF transmission, disc brakes all around, and a chassis derived from the venerable 105-series cars, the Montreal was a sophisticated and striking car. It was the production realization of the concept put forth at the Montreal Expo in 1967, and the styling by Giorgietto Giugiaro (while he was working at Bertone) was both striking and aerodynamic. Indeed, the Alfa Montreal can be viewed as a design and engineering cross between an Alfa GTV and a Lamborghini Miura SV, both of which were bodied by Bertone. Just 3925 examples were constructed (due perhaps to its high initial price and Alfa`s lackadaisical marketing), and today, they remain tremendously underappreciated cars. Their impressive mechanical specification, satisfying driving experience, and futuristic styling make them unique Italian thoroughbreds, and thanks to the substantial enthusiast support and the number of shared parts with more numerous Alfas, it is now possible to keep a Montreal in top form without breaking the bank.
Built in Late 1972, this car was first sold in France in January of 1974. It is a late production `S` model and is equipped with the later spec Spica `yellow dot` injection system. The car remained in France until 2000, having spent much of the time as part of a large collection. The current owner, believed to be the third in total, bought the car with 20,000 kms showing, and imported it to California in 2002.
Recent work in the last 1,000 kms includes the installation of a new clutch, new Koni front shocks, front brake service, Spica fuel injection system cleaning, all 6 suspension ball joints, and the reinforcing (triangulating) of the steering box mounts, which was a common design problem with the Montreal.
The car is exciting to drive. The engine pulls strong with excellent power. The gearbox is good, with very good second gear synchro when warm. The suspension is compliant, and the brakes stop the car evenly, although there is a significant amount of pedal travel. With the exception of the radio and the clock, all gauges and switches are fully operational.
Cosmetically the car stresses originality, and is in very good condition for its age and mileage. The front of the car has been painted up to the windshield, but from the windshield back the paint looks to be original. The color match is perfect, and there are no noticeable blend lines. There are some minor stress cracks in the paint in area where the body flexes, and some very minor wear marks on the doors and around the trunk opening. All the stainless bumpers and trim pieces; window frames, door strips, and grille, and in excellent unrestored condition. There is no evidence anywhere on the body or underside that the car has ever been in an accident. Overall, the car makes a strong visual impression and from 10 feet away, the average person would have a difficult time discerning this car from a fully restored example ready for show.
The interior is basically untouched, and is in very good, unrestored condition. The headliner, rear seat area, and cloth seat upholstery is excellent. All the futuristic gauges are in excellent condition, as is most of the dash, although there is one small split behind the gauge cluster. The driver`s floor carpet shows moderate wear, and the factory wood wheel is glossy but shows numerous nicks and scratches. The trunk is still fitted with the original felted wool fabric, and is in good condition.
The engine bay is original, unrestored, clean, and complete. The underside, while not detailed, is straight and solid, with absolutely no rust, and no evidence that it has ever had any accident repair. It is most likely that the actual mileage is 126,617 kms.
If you have been looking for a standout example of one of Alfa`s most interesting road cars, this car is for you. With the car comes a reproduction of the owner and shop manuals, original sales brochure, Carnet de Service, and French registration papers.
