1965 Ferrari 330 GTO Recreation
s/n 6689 engine no. 6975
Rosso Corsa with Blue Interior
The Ferrari GTO needs no introduction to automotive enthusiasts. Equally famous for its dominance in the international racing scene as for its astronomical eight figure values, the GTO is perhaps the ultimate classic Ferrari. Today they are among the world`s most historically significant and valuable cars. They were highly successful in international motor racing, winning the world sports car championship in 1962, 1963, and 1964. Today, the majority of GTO`s have been long since acquired by sophisticated collectors and are thus out of reach for most people, even Ferrari collectors. Consequently, high quality reconfigurations carrying Ferrari chassis and serial numbers, Ferrari engines, and alloy bodies of the original style and construction type, have garnered the interest of enthusiasts seeking the experience of owning and driving one of the world`s most important automobiles without the out-of-reach price tag or uneasiness associated with enjoying such a valuable car.
This particular car was originally a 330 GT 2+2 and had known history from new, having been sold new in Italy in 1965, and imported to the United States in 1973. The conversion was performed in 1987 by Allegretti in Italy, using a hand-formed alloy body made on the original body bucks. The chassis was shortened so that the wheelbase is correct for a GTO, and the body is quite accurate, in terms of both dimensions and contours. The 4 litre engine was retained, and fitted with full competition components including six two throat Weber carburetors on high rise manifold. The engine was converted to dry sump, with oil cooler and accusump. The gearbox is a competition 5-speed unit with straight-cut gears, and a Tilton pedal cluster providing adjustable brake bias. The car also has an ATL fuel cell and full integrated roll cage. There is an electric shutoff and inboard fire system as well. This example has SVRA and HSR log books for vintage racing.
Cosmetically, the car is very attractive. The correct deep offset Borrani wheels are fitted, which are seven and eight inches in width. The paint work is high quality and in very nice condition, with a few chips and nicks, most of which are confined to the front end. The correct Marchal head and fog lamps are fitted, and the correct lamps at the rear. The front and rear windscreens are Plexiglas. The limited amount of chrome is very good.
The interior indicates the level of preparation and competition mindset that were employed when this car was constructed. From the Tilton pedal cluster to the full instrumentation (including air to fuel ratio meter) to the integrated roll bar with harnesses, this car clearly means business. A plumbed in fire extinguisher system is present as well. The instrumentation is correct for a compititon minded car, employing modern more reliable gauges, except for the tachometer, which is an original Veglia item with Ferrari printed on the face. The steering wheel is a smaller wood-rimmed item, and the car is set up to fit a driver up to 6 foot four.
The engine compartment also speaks to the functional competition-minded ethos of the car. The aluminum radiator is fitted with an electric cooling fan, and the filler has been relocated so that it is no longer necessary to use the access flap. One of the hood scoops provides air for the cabin with an electric blower, and the car has been fitted with an alternator. The oil fittings are Aeroquip with braided steel lines, and there is an aluminum catch tank.
This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase a usable car that replicates the driving and aesthetic experience of a true legend. It is fully prepared with competition level components, and while previously a concours winner, it is now ideally suited to event use as an aggressive street machine or as a serious vintage racer. It is equipped with a straight exhaust and is street legal. It is very sorted and fast (reported to make 400hp), and best of all, available at well under the cost of replication. It comes with its original registration booklet (carta di circolazione per autovettura) and log books.
