1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE `Low Grille` Cabriolet
s/n 111 025 12 003993
Silver with Black Interior
One of the flagship models in its day, along with the thirstier eight cylinder counterpart, the 280SE Convertible remains a sought-after and collectible car today. They are the last of the classic, almost Baroque Mercedes 2-doors, and the last of the full-sized convertibles, presenting an elegant and comfortable way to enjoy open-air motoring with four of your full-sized friends or family members. From a technological standpoint, the cars represented Mercedes` typical engineering prowess, with fuel-injected overhead cam power plants, independent suspension all around, power steering, power disc brakes, and many convenience features. Safety was also a concern, with crumple zones, padded steering wheel and dashboard components, and three-point safety belts. The truly extraordinary qualities of this car lie in its attention to detail and craftsmanship. Very few objects of any kind, cars or otherwise, are quite so robustly built, and this is particularly striking when compared with today`s cars. These cars were the last ones to be built largely by hand, and when new, they were astronomically expensive. Consequently, few were sold, and they have always been rare.
This particular car is a US specification car with desirable options and equipment including floor shift automatic transmission, Behr air conditioning, power windows, power brakes, and power steering. This car was owned by the same gentleman from 1973 to 2008, and always had the car maintained properly. Included with the car are records back to 1992, indicating servicing several times a year. Recent items include subframe mounts, four new shock absorbers, new tires, major service including hoses and belts. The heater cables, brake rotors, and pads have also been replaced. The tachometer and the air conditioning are not operable at the moment, and the radio volume low, suggesting that perhaps a new amplifier is required.
Cosmetically, this car is in nice presentable driver condition. It was repainted at some point in the past in its original color, DB180 silver. The door jambs were not painted at this time. The car is attractive, but the paint shows some issues with preparation, as well as a handful of small chips and a small dent in the left front fender. The panels fit well and are straight, and most importantly, there are no signs of corrosion. The chrome has light pitting but is attractive overall. The glass and lights are excellent across the board.
The interior is mostly original and is well preserved. The front seats are excellent, and have been recently redyed. The carpets are original and show minimal wear considering their age, though the rubber driver`s heel pad has mostly worn away. The wood around the windows and on top of the dashboard has been beautifully refinished, while the remaining wood is in good shape, with some light cracking. The remainder of the interior is well preserved, with the occasional sign of patina.
The trunk is original and well preserved, with the rubber mat in excellent condition. The trunk floor is free of corrosion, and the jack and lug wrench are both still present. The engine compartment is dirty but intact and mostly original. There are signs of recent maintenance however, and the car runs well. The underside is also original and quite solid, if not detailed.
This is a fine opportunity to acquire a sympathetically cared for and unmolested example of this beautifully engineered convertible. It has enjoyed very long term ownership and proper care, making it an ideal car to use and enjoy.
