1960 Lancia Flaminia Coupe by Touring
s/n 824.00-1142 engine no. 82300 1652
Silver with Red Interior

Famous for their incredible craftsmanship, brilliant engineering solutions, and complete disregard for cost accounting with respect to those engineering solutions, pre-Fiat Lancias are, in many ways, in a class of their own. The Flaminia was the flagship during these years, with elegant and strong Superleggera bodies by Touring and sophisticated engineering features. Disc brakes, inboard at the rear, were standard, as was an all aluminum V6, descendant of one of the first V6 engines built. Rear suspension was of the de Dion type and a fully synchronized rear-mounted transaxle (Lancia`s first) was also part of the specification. The car is full of fascinating engineering details showing that at Lancia during this period, it was engineers, not accountants who made decision. A quick look in the engine compartment reveals an external oil cooler, as well as a neat set of thermostatically actuated mechanical blinds over the radiator. The Flaminia was available in a number of coupe, convertible, or sedan configurations, and this particular example is a Touring bodied non 2+2 example that has the more elegant lower roofline.

This particular example was imported from Southern Italy about seven or eight years ago, and has been owned by a well-known Italian car mechanic. It is cosmetically attractive and mechanically excellent, having just had a new brake booster and master cylinder fitted.

Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression. The paint is attractive, though it does show some surface blemishes and a few small dents. There are no outward signs of corrosion other than a handful of very small bubbles (smaller than pencil erasers) in the rocker area. There is a large dent in the splash area behind the left rear wheel. The bottoms of the doors exhibit considerable rust but the remainder of the car is extremely solid and straight. The chrome shows moderate pitting, while the lights and glass are very good, aside from a wiper mark on the windscreen.

The interior is beautifully executed and in nice overall condition. The seat upholstery is excellent, while the door panels and carpets are very good. The headliner is original and well-preserved, and both dome lights work. The dashboard is extremely attractive, with beautifully detailed enormous gauges that convey much useful information. The level of detailing and quality is very high, with neatly engraved trim. The dash itself shows some patina but remains attractive.

The trunk is predominantly original and well-preserved. The trunk floor is free from corrosion, and the correct spare is in place. The engine compartment has a similar feel and is quite tidy. It would respond well to an afternoon`s work spent detailing but all of the important and difficult to source parts are present.

This car is mechanically excellent, ensuring that the most difficult part of the Lancia ownership experience can be avoided with this car. Many parts can be difficult to source, and the sophistication of the driveline makes rebuilds involving. The engine and transmission of this car are excellent, however, and the brakes work well.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a usable and mechanically sound example of this thoughtfully designed car. If driving a contemporary Maserati or Ferrari is like putting on a pair of flashy athletic shoes, then a Lancia is more like a tailored sport jacket. They are understated but sophisticated, and appeal to enthusiasts who appreciate the fine qualities of the car. This particular example is perfect to enjoy as is, or would make a wonderfully solid and complete example on which to perform a high caliber cosmetic restoration.
