White with Brown Interior

Descended from the Turismo Internazionale class of Italian saloon car racing, the Giulia Super and its homologated racing variant the Super Ti, are among the earliest sport sedans and are the distant ancestors of today’s widely available “hot hatches”. The technical specification of the Giulia Super was impressive, with disc brakes, the larger 1600cc (rather than 1300cc) dual overhead cam powerplant with twin Webers, 5-speed transmission and a wonderful chassis that allowed the family man tremendous entertainment while still appearing to be a responsible patriarch, an unusually rare combination in the period. As a result of their entertaining driving experience and impressive mechanical specification, the cars are sought after today by enthusiasts who now regard an entertaining performance sedan as commonplace, but may not appreciate how special it was to find such a car in the 1960s.

This particular car is a long time California car that retained its black California license plates until 2009. It has hand written service notes back to 1988, when the car showed 50,000km and supports the gradual accumulation to the current reading of 8700km since the odometer rolled over. The notes indicate continuous and fastidious servicing, including a complete motor rebuild of a 2.0 liter unit to high performance specifications. The engine was built in 1998 by Steve Poff, about 13,000 miles ago, and has Pittitori cams, new valves and guides, racing valve springs, high compression piston liner set, and new bearings, to name a few things. The engine was balanced, the crank polished, and the head ported. The motor mounts were replaced, the ancillaries rebuilt as necessary, including the water pump, starter, and carburetors. The car was also fitted with a European airbox. The transmission also redone with new synchros, the flywheel lightened, and a 4.10 limited slip differential fitted.

The car’s current owner bought it from Fantasy Junction in 2009 and has serviced and maintained the car regularly since, with new brake master cylinder, two rebuilt brake calipers, regular fluid changes and chassis lube, tuning the carburetors, new air filter, new Ferodo brake pads, and new high energy ignition module.

The car is in very nice cosmetic condition, with a straight and solid body with very good gaps and fit. The doors shut with a solidity that evokes period Mercedes. The paint is in very good condition, with a few small chips but strong overall presentation. There is one crack in the paint on the left C-pillar between the rear quarter window and rear windscreen. The lights and glass are in good overall condition, with a few small marks to the windscreen and some cracks to the rear lights. The remaining windows and lights are in fine shape. The windscreen seals have some cracks and the chrome is very good overall, with light pitting in selected areas.

The interior has a fresh but correct appearance overall, with well-executed upholstery and an excellent headliner. The carpets are very nice, as is the dashboard wood. The gauges are in excellent shape as is the steering wheel, save for some cracks to the horn button and horn button surround. The chrome is generally very nice, although it is peeling from the headliner grab handle and there is minor pitting on the trim around the wood to the left of the instrument cluster. The weather stripping around the doors is showing age.

The engine compartment is fundamentally unrestored, though many of the components have obviously been rebuilt or replaced. The valve cover is neatly polished and the engine itself is quite clean. The inner fenders and firewall are solid but unrestored and the overall impression is of a car that has been used and well-maintained.

The trunk is correct and unrestored in appearance, with a well-preserved appearance. The correct rubber Alfa Romeo mat is in place, as is the jack. The floor is generally solid, although there are some cracks and minor corrosion visible around the fuel tank support flange. The undercarriage is solid and free of corrosion, although there is a transverse seam at the rear section of the floor, indicating that the rear clip of the car was replaced in the past. The work appears to have been well done. There is no top side evidence of the repair work, and the gaps and fit of the panels is excellent.

The car runs and drives superbly. The motor is strong, and the car is very quick. The gearbox shifts well with excellent syncromesh. The chassis is composed, competent, and encourages enthusiastic cornering. The brakes have good bite, pull the car up evenly, and effectively stop the car, with a firmer and more confidence inspiring pedal feel than is typical of most vintage cars. All in all, it is huge fun to drive.

This is a superb opportunity to acquire a long term California car that looks essentially stock but provides seriously enhanced performance. Quite solid and attractively presented overall, this is a fine example of Alfa’s wonderful sport sedan from the 60s that has been mechanically sorted and is ready to enjoy.
