1963 Porsche 356B T-6 Super 90
s/n 212759 engine no. P*806678*
Bali Blue with Grey Leather Interior

Introduced in 1959, to replace the 356A, the 356B brought refinement and performance to Porsche’s increasingly popular and now iconic sports car. The 1962 model marked the introduction of the T6 body, which featured a larger trunk opening, external fuel filler with door, and twin grille engine lid. As with previous models, the 356B incorporated thoughtful and functional design elements, high quality, value, reliability, and mechanical robustness. Enthusiasts today boast of these same qualities, endearing new generations of collectors with timeless design and mechanical delights.

This particular car is a rare T-6 Karmann bodied example boasting impeccable original structural integrity and original numbered factory body panels. Built as Porsche transitioned from the Reutter coachworks facility to the Karmann works, the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms this factory delivered Super 90 was produced January 14, 1963 in Bali Blue with Grey Leatherette interior. The original service booklet indicates the first owner was Mr. Edward Caoness of St. Helena, CA, who purchased the car from the Dalzel-Graham dealership in Vallejo, CA. Service records accompanying the car date back to 1984, including California registration and ownership documents. Further support of the long term California ownership is evident in the Dalzell-Graham Auto, Vallejo, CA dealer license frame and California black and yellow license plate with nearly ¼” worth of annual tabs adhered to the plate, stacking up to what amounts to 55 years of registration tabs. Recognized by the current owner as a five-owner car, this Super 90 was restored over several years by the fourth owner, beginning in the 1990s and completed in 2001. The restoration included a repaint of the original body panels (all body numbers matching) in the correct Bali Blue.

During the restoration, a new leather interior was installed by Porsche specialist, Doug McComb and upgraded with a beautiful wood steering wheel (by Ted Capps), newer rear-anchor seat belts, and correct headrests in matching grey vinyl. Particular care was given to preserve the originality of the floor pan and battery box. Coated in the original factory undercoating, the floor pan was preserved while the original engine and transmission were removed for rebuild and reinstalled using correct components. Porsche engine specialist Leo Droughton rebuilt the engine with a 86mm Big Bore kit, and a sport muffler was installed. The speedometer was rebuilt during the restoration and the odometer reset when the engine was rebuilt. Currently showing 22,884 miles, records indicate the miles at time of rebuild were roughly 85,000, however, some additional miles are thought to have accumulated while the odometer was not recording, which would make the total miles on the car today approximately 110,000. Droughton further prepared the car for enthusiast driving, dropping the chassis 1”, installing wider wheels, and boxing the front A-arms using recommended welded steel stiffener plates. Droughton also installed front-end link pins using rare needle bearings. The restoration was completed using H4 headlights, a correct set of Porsche fog lamps, and a period correct luggage rack, installed to beautifully finish the exterior of the car. The current owner, a highly respected Porsche enthusiast and family restoration expert, has maintained this car to a high standard, driving and enjoying the car as originally intended when it was built while preserving the originality and heritage this car rightfully deserves. In September 2017, this Super 90 won second place at the judged Niello Porsche/Serrano Concours show, and previously in four years attending the “North Meets South” show (judged by Porsche entrants) this car won two first and two second place awards.

Today, this Super 90 still retains the hallmarks of the high-quality restoration done several years ago. The body and paint are in excellent condition with very nice gloss throughout. The original body panels are very nice with excellent panel gaps, tight closures, and excellent fit. There are some minor paint blemishes along the right side of the rocker panel, and a few minor marks from road use, but otherwise, the paint is in very nice condition throughout. Glass, trim, emblems, and chrome plating also present in excellent condition with the windshield showing one chip but remaining glass in very good condition. The wider chrome plated wheels are in excellent condition and all four original, date stamped wheels are included with the car.

The grey leather interior presents very nicely with excellent trim and fit, showing some patina on the seat surfaces, but still presenting a very cohesive and handsome interior throughout. The dashboard and beautifully restored instrumentation present a stunning array, supported by the owner-added wood rimmed steering wheel and excellent horn ring and center emblem. Carpeting, headliner, and door trim are all in very good to excellent condition showing minor use since the restoration, delivering a vintage feel while retaining fine finishes and details.

Under the hood, the engine bay displays a handsome and original presentation with the correct air filter housings, oil filter canister, and appropriate decals. The original engine has been restored using correct finishes, proper coatings, hardware, and fasteners. The engine compartment is also nicely finished and represents the comprehensive attention to detail afforded when the restoration was completed. The front storage compartment further supports the originality, featuring the original, date coded spare tire rim, correct hood number stampings, and properly finished components. The undercarriage is mercifully original displaying the original factory undercoating, Super 90 specific camber compensator, excellent and preserved floor pans and battery box, and original components as one would expect from such a well-preserved California Porsche.

With the extra horsepower of the Super 90, the car is a delight to drive. The engine starts easily and settles into idle smoothly. The clutch and gearbox are nicely paired with smooth engagement. Power comes on strong in all gears and handling is particularly nimble with the lower stance and wider wheels. Driving at speed, one is impressed with the integrity and feel of this original car, offering smooth driving manners and delightful suspension in combination with the surprisingly responsive Super 90 motor and big bore kit.

Accompanied by years of service records dating back to the late 1980s, California registration documents, California front and rear black and yellow license plates, original ownership manual, service booklet, and red vinyl case, proper tools and roll, two sets of keys, including the original keys and Porsche key fob, and the original four date stamped wheels, this Super 90 Porsche 356 B is ready for delightful driving and enjoyment as only a truly original car can present, both for long term satisfaction and short term driving pleasure.
