The Porsche 911 was revealed to an eager automotive public in the fall of 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Developed as a replacement for the highly successful 356, the 911 arrived with more power, more comfort, and favorably priced against comparable cars. The 911 became the darling of the automotive press, and rightly so. Performance and sales were brisk, but over time, improvements were needed. In September 1969, Porsche released the 2.2L C-Series Model 911 for the 1970 model year. Refinements included lengthening the wheelbase by 2.4 inches, flaring the front and rear fenders to accommodate wider wheels and tires, upgrading the heating and ventilating systems, and numerous other interior and exterior improvements.

Three versions (911T, 911E and 911S) were available in either Coupe or Targa body style. And while all 911 series cars were quite powerful and formidable on the road, the 911S was the preferred choice of performance enthusiasts. The S model engine featured a re-profiled camshaft, larger valves, better porting, higher compression and M.F.I fuel injection. This resulted in 30 more horsepower for a total 180 horsepower and 199 torque. Chassis upgrades included a rear anti-roll bar, Koni shocks and ventilated disc brakes, which replaced the standard solid rotors, For the S model, special gear ratios were installed in the five-speed transmission including an overdrive in 5th gear.

This particular 911S is an exceptionally solid, honest, matching numbers example, presented in the original Signal Orange color with black leatherette, and featuring a highly desirable option package including sunroof, air-conditioning, three-point safety belts, front and rear bumpers without horns, a tow hook in the rear, halogen high beam flood lights, tinted glass, and rare electric power windows. The car has been diligently documented by the few but long-term owners to have come previously, and we know from the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and 26 years of records on file that the car was actively cared for. In the early 1990s, the engine was rebuilt from the case up using updated head studs, time chain, rails, and tensioners, with 70,000 miles indicated at that time. The brake hydraulic system was compressively rebuilt, and the road wheels restored and clear anodized as original. By 1998 the car was on the west coast of the US where it has remained since, and shortly thereafter fitted with s the updated stainless mufflers and heat exchangers. In 2008, at about 79,000 miles, the car was fitted with new Michelin XWX tires, the air conditioning system comprehensively rebuilt and new R-12 refrigerant added, and considerable interior restoration work performed which remains fresh today. At this time the car shows just 80,000 miles, which is support as accurate given the 26 years of paperwork on file. This 911S was sold to the present owner by Gooding & Company in 2010. Importantly, the CoA confirms this car retains its matching numbers engine.

Cosmetically, the car presents beautifully, with excellent paint showing high gloss throughout the entire car, with only minor evidence of road use present in the lower body panels. The door jambs and other inner body surfaces display the original paint, which remains in very good condition. The bodywork and paint was recently completed to high standards and all panels open and shut as expected, displaying consistent dimensions and fit. There are no major flaws to detract significantly from the car’s visual presentation. The chrome is very good to excellent condition, with minor light scratching on the window frames and the door handles showing some pitting on the top surfaces. The lights, lenses, and glass are in excellent condition with good gloss, clarity, and coloring. The exterior window garnish is in very nice condition with proper luster. The rubber trim on the bumpers and glass are in excellent condition throughout, with areas of the inner door rubber exhibiting signs of wear. The Fuchs wheels are very nicely presented with proper finish and stunning rims with no significant marks or curb rash. Michelin XWX tires are appropriately sized and have excellent tread.

The interior displays a beautiful combination of original and correctly restored features. The glass throughout the car is in excellent shape with no chips or cracks. Door panels, dash, and rear seats are very nicely preserved and the correct sport seats have been properly covered in a very nice original style material matching the rest of the car throughout. The carpeting is in very good condition with matching floor mats. The headliner appears to be original with the correct rear zipper for access to the smoothly operating power sunroof. The instruments, dial faces, and needles are in excellent condition and function properly. Completing the handsome black interior are the optional power windows, which operate smoothly on both sides.

The engine compartment and trunk are both very tidy and reflect the quality of the restoration and respect given to the original portions of this Porsche. The engine has been properly maintained exhibiting correct finishes and appropriate fittings, original style components, and good overall presentations. The undercarriage is remarkably clean, solid, and free of corrosion. The tub appears original with no notable damage to the proper factory undercoating.

On the road, this car performs with ease and simplicity, making great power and delivering a tight ride with excellent handling and acceleration. Feedback from the 5 speed gear box is enhanced via the short shift kit (original included with the sale) shifting quickly and easily through all gears. The integrity of the car is delightfully revealed with each mile validating the restoration and originality, body integrity, and responsive engine. The engine starts easily, revs immediately and is currently well-tuned. The car pulls cleanly through the rev range without hesitation. The brakes are very nice with smooth operation and feedback. Handling is very good overall with no rattles or cowl shudder when proceeding over bumps or rough roads.

Included with the sale are records for ownership and maintenance back to 1990, extra keys, an original 1970 Porsche sales brochure, a very complete book set including the warranty card, a jack, spare, and tools. The 2.2L 911S is regarded by many as the holy grail of Porsche road cars, and this unusually well-optioned matching numbers example in outstanding colors is an excuse-free collector’s grade automobile worth reaching for.
