The Porsche 911 combines classic looks with superb road manners and drivability, particularly when compared with other cars of the same vintage. Early 911s have become more and more sought after in recent years, and rightly so. The first 911 arrived in the US in 1965. Agile and capable sports cars, the 911 series lacked a critical feature for the American market – the convertible body. Efforts were made to build a convertible 911 but roll-over protection was deemed a critical part of meeting safety standards by the Porsche team who worried that the US would no longer approve fully open cars for road use. Thus entered the “Targa” design. Allowing open-air motoring while retaining body rigidity and safety, the 911 Targa became a hit with US buyers, arriving in 1967 and selling quite well in the model lineup.

By 1973, the Porsche 911 Targa was the pinnacle open top sports car of its era. These late series cars (1972 and 1973) are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, and remain the ultimate development of the 'long hood' 911. After 1973, the 911 faced heavy emissions restrictions and requirements, which hampered performance and reliability. 1973 was also the last year of the “T” series offering with the 140hp engine in both coupe and Targa form.

This 911T example is a late 1973 or 1973 ½ factory delivered Air Conditioned three-owner car with the second owner having retained it for most of its life. The late series cars from 1973 came with CIS K-Jetronic Fuel-Injection and are considered the preferable version. According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this car was completed in July 1973 and delivered with the following optional equipment: US Equipment, Forged Alloy Wheels, Front and Rear Stabilizer Bars, Comfort Equipment, Manual Antenna, Loudspeaker and Noise Suppression, Air Conditioner, Condenser, Tinted Glass All Around, and Pirelli Tires. The second owner used the car regularly for many years, retaining records for the work, including an engine rebuild in 1986 (records included with the car). In the late 1990’s the second owner had become too old to drive the car and placed it into long-term storage, where it was raised on jack stands, and remained in an enclosed dry garage for roughly 18 years. The current owner purchased the car approximately a year ago, removed the engine and performed a detailed service of major components. Chain tensioners were upgraded, the fuel tank was drained and cleaned, the clutch and brakes were serviced, and key mechanical components changed out only as needed. Attention to originality was key as this car had been well preserved during the storage period. At some point during the second ownership, the car was repainted in a similar silver metallic. This paint job remains on the car today, exhibiting driver quality finish, showing some signs of wear, but remaining very presentable and serviceable for driving duties.

The overall condition of the car is quite nice considering the originality of the dry body and most components. The exterior finish is very glossy and rubber trim appears to be nice in many areas, with some pieces showing signs of minor wear. The chrome headlight trim is in very nice condition. Door handles show some signs of pitting, but retain a nice shine. The rear and side glass appear to be original and in good condition overall. The windshield has minor marks but is very serviceable as is. The doors, hood, and deck lid all open and shut as expected, retaining factory fit and what appears to be original paint in the door jambs and underside surfaces. The original cast wheels are nicely preserved with minor signs of road use and no notable bead edge damage.

The interior has been nicely refinished just a few months ago with new leather front and rear seats, replacement door panels, and an otherwise very nice dashboard, though not known to be original. Instruments are in nice visual condition overall and retain good function with the exception of the clock. An after-market Alpine radio has been installed (with record showing early 1990s). The original air-conditioning does function although will likely require some servicing in the future. The underside of the car is in good condition overall with no major damage and no evidence of any panels having been replaced. The removable Targa roof remains in very good overall original condition with no major damage to the surface or sun damage.

The original body and components make this an excellent driving car overall. The gearbox is smooth and effortless and exhibits no play or difficulty engaging. Once the engine is warmed up, throttle response is very good and the revs come on smoothly in all gears. Cornering is very nice and the overall steering is tight and responsive. This 911T is truly a very nice driving car that can be enjoyed as is. The current owner has recently completed roughly 1000 miles of driving after returning the car to road use after long-term storage. Included with the car are a complete tool kit, jack, proper spare tire and wheel, Porsche CoA, and copious mechanical records dating back to 1983, showing evidence of Porsche specialist repairs and service through the 1980s and 1990s.
