Ferdinand Porsche’s first road going model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine output had more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented significant advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. They were available as both coupes and cabriolets.

This particular car is a long time California car, having remained with the current owner for the last 16 years, which was purchased by him in Sacramento, California. A previous advert for the car reports that it was restored in 1988 with new paint and upholstery and a rebuilt engine, but with little uses since 1992. The current owner has had noted Porsche 356 restorer Ted Blake perform a conversion to 12V, and rebuild the engine and transmission, among other works.

In 2003 Ted Blake became the go-to man for maintenance, restoration, and rebuild work, initially rebuilding all four calipers, and then the engine in 2009.

The 2008 engine rebuild was a no-expense-spared effort which included a conversion to Weber carbs, updated valves, a magnifluxed and balanced Scat crank, new valve springs and guides, crank gears, rings, and an aluminum oil cooler. In total, the rebuild cost over $16,000, and very few miles have been logged since. Prior to the engine, Blake also rebuilt all four brake calipers. More recently, in 2013, the transmission was rebuilt at a cost of over $5,000, and less than 200 miles have been logged since. In 2014 the car received new rear shocks. The car is accompanied by records for the last 16 years of ownership.

Cosmetically, the car is best described as a nice driver level example, with very good structural integrity, which is of paramount importance on unibody cars. The opening panels have good fitment and shut lines, particularly at the doors and engine lid. During the current ownership period the car saw considerable attention to the brightwork including new bumper overriders, hood handle, emblems license plate housing, and wider chrome wheels. The underside is quite original in appearance, without evidence of significant metalwork or repairs, and remains solid. The battery box has been replaced once by Ted Blake, according to the receipts on file.

The interior is also in keeping with nice driver presentation. The seats have been reupholstered in a material faithful to original specification. Correct rubber mats are employed on the floors and the car retains its original black steering wheel, gauges, and switchgear.

On account of the massive amount of recent work performed, this is a great driving example of a late 356 series car. It has a responsive and communicative feel, excellent power and engine note, precise steering, and ample stopping ability, thanks to its disc brakes. An ideal candidate for the Porsche enthusiast looking to enjoy his 356 C on the road, this car’s nice driver cosmetic appearance pairs perfectly with its fresh mechanical trim and disc brakes to make it the choice mount for a trans-continental drive, or on a daily basis to and from the office.
